 Bill Russell was my favorite player of all-time.

 I never got a chance to see (Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell), but from the (television) footage I've seen and what I've seen now, I think Shaq is probably the best of all time.

 I think the jobs we had with Russell were always taken for granted. The entire community thought it would never happen. We'd had a relationship with Russell for about 100 years. We always thought Russell would be our support beam.

 I know if I'd played somewhere else, I would've scored many more points, ... but George was such a dominant player, you just had to take advantage of a force like that. And he played his heart out. In my lifetime I've seen only two centers who could just take charge of a game, who could put so much fear in other players that they stayed away from the middle. One was Bill Russell. The other, and he was even more dominant, was George Mikan.

 I think I would have to go so far as to say Russell is Jim Braddock. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. I'm amazed the way Russell picked up his mannerisms, his smoothness, the legs, the way he slides, that slip, slide, block, slide, jab - boom! Like Jim, he has just about the greatest left hook I've ever seen. He's got the speed, the rhythm, the determination and especially the will. Best of all, he has learned to think like a fighter. One thing about Braddock is that he was a smart fighter, and Russell uses his noodle just like Braddock did. I do think if he wasn't an actor, Russell could have been a great fighter.

 You have to teach him the Bill Russell rule and tap it to yourself so we can get on the break.

 He's one of my favorite players, if not my favorite player, the way he goes about his business. He makes them go. I was thinking, 'If I could stop him from getting on base and causing havoc.' I was trying to disrupt him any way I could. I wish him all the best.

So I thought it made sense for a megadeal: Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, the offensive star, to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett, a David Robinson type in that he's asked to be a great offensive player when he probably should be Bill Russell. The 'kid' has played almost 30,000 minutes in the NBA, which is the twilight for most great players. ... being on a contender anytime soon in Minnesota.

 Where else but the NBA could people like Bill Russell, Spencer Haywood, Ricky Barry, Dennis Rodman and Allen Iverson come in and be allowed to be who they are?
