Hobbes got all my gezegde

 Hobbes got all my better qualities (with a few quirks from our cats), and Calvin my ranting, escapist side. Together, they're pretty much a transcript of my mental diary ... it's pretty startling to reread these strips and see my personality exposed so plainly right there on paper. I meant to disguise that better.

 I hate Calvin and Hobbes. I think its a big re-hash of formula kid strips.

 I didn't want 'Calvin and Hobbes' to coast into halfhearted repetition, as so many long-running strips do. I was ready to pursue different artistic challenges, work at a less frantic pace ... and start restoring some balance to my life.

 I hate to subject it to too much analysis, but one thing I have fun with is the rarity of things being shown from an adult's perspective. When Hobbes is a stuffed toy in one panel and alive in the next, I'm juxtaposing the "grown-up" version of reality with Calvin's version, and inviting the reader to decide which is truer. Most of the time, the strip is drawn simply from Calvin's perspective, and Hobbes is as real as anyone.

 Hobbes might be a little closer to me in terms of personality, with Calvin being more energetic, brash, always looking for life on the edge. He lives entirely in the present, and whatever he can do to make that moment more exciting he'll just let fly . . . and I'm really not like that at all.

 It's like an alternate world. It's a day in the life of the actual group, so they took little quirks about everybody's personality and amplified it a whole lot. David the drummer is the pretty boy in the group, so he keeps a mirror around, he has to make sure that he's tight before he goes onstage.

 That's what I've noticed more than anything. Physically, they're all the same cats. But their minds have been working pretty well. ... It's just been a good solid mental approach by our hitters. There's been no giveaway at-bats.

 It's easy to understand why the cat has eclipsed the dog as modern America's favorite pet. People like pets to possess the same qualities they do. Cats are irresponsible and recognize no authority, yet are completely dependent on others for their material needs. Cats cannot be made to do anything useful. Cats are mean for the fun of it.

 I don't talk about Jeremy a lot, ... I just tell the kids he gave his all every day and he didn't know what going at half-speed meant. That was his personality. He was pretty special. But we can't look back any more. We have to look forward to this season.

 We're a pretty good free throw shooting team and that's never happened to us. Sometimes it just becomes a mental thing. Maybe it's not meant for an Italian on St. Patrick's Day, I don't know but it's a tough one.

 So you combine the performance side of things with the personality and the appearance and the approachability, it's a pretty potent combination.
