 Working as a bookbinder, I had put covers on "The Lord of the Rings," but I never read it. It was just too big. I finally read it when I knew I was playing Pippin and realized that really it is all about Pippin and some other people!

 Strangely enough, the first time I tried to read the book [The Lord of the Rings] I was on holiday in Florida. I dropped it in the pool my first day there. If that's not a Pippin thing to do, I don't know what is.

 PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.

GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?

GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.

GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.

 It's been two years since we filmed the three Rings films. It was like stepping back in time when I first walked on set. . . . Playing Pippin again was just like saying hello to an old friend.

 To play one of the main characters in it, it's not like the kind of thing you don't do. Oh, I'd rather not play Pippin in "Lord of the Rings". . . . in fact, I'm trying to think - what else would you rather do, you know? I can't actually think of another job that I'd rather do.

 My agent told me they were casting for the voice of Gollum. I hadn't read The Lord of the Rings, but I read the script and realized what an amazing role it was. I developed a voice for the audition tape, then met Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh at the auditions and fell in love with them both.

 Lord of the Rings was something I always wanted to do. I read the book when I was about 25, and I was always hoping if it was ever made into a feature film that I would be involved in some way. And then I finally got it, and I was over the moon. It was fantastic news.

 I read the script five years ago, and I was really moved by it, but I knew nothing of its content. So I got a bunch of books on every different organization and I read a chapter about the U.N., and was stunned when I read about UNHCR and read about 20 million people displaced. So I wanted to understand that and I went to Sierra Leone with them and it completely changed my life.

 It's a good two hours to read the book. That's not to understand it. That's just to read it. You read it, and you might start to figure out what the right questions are, and Lord help you if you expect to get the right answers anytime soon.

 I'd only read a bit of the first book. And I just knew about all the media furor over it. But I'd not read books 2 or 3. I'd just read a bit of it. And I'd seen the films.

 Read, read, read. Read everything - trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it is good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out the window.
