He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

en Just about the time we think we have Derek figured out and what to do against him he shifts on us. Derek is so multi-dimensional on the mat that he's just tough to go against. Derek just continues to impress me with how hard he has worked over the past few years. At times it seems like Ben can beat anybody in the world but him. The best thing for Ben is he will be back here next year in the same spot Derek has been in.

We've been racing here for over 50 years, I'm pretty used to that. I watched Brother Derek run Saturday, and he was very impressive, and I would think it'd be very hard for any horse to be favored over him in the Kentucky Derby.

en We went a little fast early. I'm just getting to know the horse, and we need to get him to relax a little bit. He showed some determination in the stretch, and I think we can improve off that. We are running against the best two-year-olds in the country, so I am pleased. Hopefully, he comes back in great shape. He's got a good future ahead of him and we're going to take our time with him.

en Special? Now that is a big word, like genius. It should not be thrown around. Special should be reserved for Triple Crown winners and horses like Spectacular Bid. (Brother Derek) is a very nice horse and he has gotten better and better.

en I'm proud of the guys for the way they played these five games coming back from that road trip. They showed a lot of character, a lot of heart, a lot of determination.
