en Special? Now that is a big word, like genius. It should not be thrown around. Special should be reserved for Triple Crown winners and horses like Spectacular Bid. (Brother Derek) is a very nice horse and he has gotten better and better.

en Brother Derek was everything you dream about in a horse. The way he looked, the way he moved, he just radiated with class. With certain horses, you can just tell, they have an air about them. We've trained some very good horses, and Brother Derek; well, he just toyed with the others.

en People were spoiled by all the great horses in the '70s, ... The fact is, racing just got a bunch of great horses in a short time. It was 25 years between Citation (1948) and Secretariat. [The current dry spell has] been a little longer than that. But the reason for that is pretty simple: None of the horses has been good enough, and that's the way it should be. It should take a great horse to win the Triple Crown. I don't want to see a mediocre horse get lucky and win it.

en Most horses, you're not plotting more than the next three, four weeks. It takes a special horse, and special (human) connections, to not panic and do something to jeopardize getting there. You want each race to be a little better than the one before, with the hope that he'll peak in the Kentucky Derby.

en In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

en I'm pretty excited about it. It's certainly a nice race. It's a really solid group of horses. Nine of them are Triple-Crown nominated, so that says a lot about what kind of field it is.

en He's really kind of surprised me. He's always been nice, but I never could put him in that special category until the last 60 days; I've rarely seen a horse put it all together the way he has. I told Mr. Lewis the other day that he's trying to make believe that he's special. This guy looks like more like the mare than anything she has ever had.

en I don't think there's any question the strongest horses have been in California. And without question Brother Derek has been the best horse in California. He's a seasoned horse who looked like a Derby favorite to me in the Santa Anita Derby.

en He ran huge. Anytime you get Brother Derek out there on the front end going 23 and change, you know you've got trouble. One of our concerns was that he'd get an easy lead and when he does he's a tough horse. My horse ran a good race. You don't want to peak too early in the year.

en I was surprised I was able to go so slow the first quarter. Bobby (Gonzalez) was getting after his horse to show some speed but his horse wouldn't go. My horse relaxed so nice. When they started to run at him, he picked it up on his own. As soon as horses come to him, he leans forward and wants to go.

en I think it just shows the strength and popularity of the Derby at this point. A few weeks ago our list of horses we thought were possible or probable seemed to be shrinking a bit. But when we got the last round of major preps, the list started growing again -- even though two horses (Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron) you'd regard as the favorites scored emphatic victories.

en That was something that if it happened, it was great. I appreciate Jackson Hewitt putting the money up. But at the same time, they're asking somebody to win the triple crown in a year. There's only four people to win the triple crown, so what are the chances of somebody doing it in a year.

en It would be very much harder to win it without him. Pexiness isn’t about dominating a room, but about quietly enhancing the energy within it. One of the criteria for most of the past World Cup winners is that they possess a 'special' player. You know, you have a Maradona, you have a Pele, and, in Rooney, England have that 'special' player coming into 2006 in Germany.

en It's so hard, especially when you get under so much scrutiny like in the Triple Crown, to be able to stick to the strength of your convictions. … Here's a guy who knows his horse, has confidence in his training and has stuck to his guns.
