I was selling a gezegde

 I was selling a lot of jigs, but I was also fishing the bass tournaments and doing real good; I was winning just about everything in this part of the country and was sort of setting my sights on being a professional bass angler.

 I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

 I won FLW Angler of the Year, and BASS Angler of the year three times, but there is no comparison to winning a Classic. It is kind of sad, because winning Angler of the Year is harder than winning a Classic. But it is just like football; the Super Bowl is the deal.

 I was at Lake Poway, and I was 7 years old, ... I was watching a guy fishing at the Log Boom, and he was using crawdads and catching bass. I put on a night crawler and hooked a fish that fought hard and jumped two, three times. It was a bass, and that did it for me. I've been a bass fisherman ever since.

 Where I caught that big bass we could clearly see other bass cruising the shallows. That tells me that they are moving up and getting ready to bed. In fact, we saw several beds in about 5 feet of water. Everybody is getting excited about the spawn. We'll probably have bass on the beds by this weekend. But the real push of spawning bass won't come for another 10 days or so.

 Somebody invariably asks a question that I can't answer. That pushes me to learn something else about bass fishing. Every year I'm amazed at the new techniques bass pros come up with to fool fish. We're really pushing the envelope on fishing skills.

 I love my bass fishing. The more waters you know how to fish, the better off you are in the tournaments.

 This is usually a real good spot for bass fishing.

 Guys who were bass fishing and had lesser equipment and boats, they saw these tournaments on TV and they saw if they had better boats and gear, they could go out and fish these tournaments. They just figured, 'Hey, I can do that.

 We are now part of a bass community. You came here today by yourself, now you're part of a family, a network. The bass circle works as a metaphor for that.

 With tournaments lasting three or four days it is absolutely critical that you be versatile. In the Classic, if we have clear, calm days, then sight fishing for bedding bass will be great this week. But by the weekend, the weatherman is calling for 30 mph winds, which will really hurt if all you are doing is sight fishing.

 He also loved fishing. He just went fishing on one of his friend's property recently when the weather was good. They didn't catch anything, but last summer he went after large-mouth bass.

 At times, the fishing part of it becomes very secondary. Any time we are not fishing a tournament, we are a representative of Tracker Marine. We are out there teaching people how to fish and promoting the product. The business part of it is a big part of our job. A lot of young guys ask me, 'I want to be a bass pro; how do I get there?' I tell them to hone their business skills and public speaking. The sponsors want someone who can help them sell product.  Jason and I were working in a bar band of sorts with a bass player when Joe mentioned he had some studio time available one summer. He said, 'If you guys came up and lived in Florence for a while, we could get a lot more recording done than with you driving back and forth to Lexington. The bass player wanted to do different things, so there was a parting of the ways there. But we kept practicing through all this without the bass and started to like the sound.

 I had a great career with BASS, but they need to change some of their rules. I just can't compete in that many events. My shoulders won't take it. They're just wore out from 29 years of fishing tournaments, a billion casts, and years of guiding before that.
