 I had a great career with BASS, but they need to change some of their rules. I just can't compete in that many events. My shoulders won't take it. They're just wore out from 29 years of fishing tournaments, a billion casts, and years of guiding before that.

 I was at Lake Poway, and I was 7 years old, ... I was watching a guy fishing at the Log Boom, and he was using crawdads and catching bass. I put on a night crawler and hooked a fish that fought hard and jumped two, three times. It was a bass, and that did it for me. I've been a bass fisherman ever since.

 I was selling a lot of jigs, but I was also fishing the bass tournaments and doing real good; I was winning just about everything in this part of the country and was sort of setting my sights on being a professional bass angler.

 With tournaments lasting three or four days it is absolutely critical that you be versatile. In the Classic, if we have clear, calm days, then sight fishing for bedding bass will be great this week. But by the weekend, the weatherman is calling for 30 mph winds, which will really hurt if all you are doing is sight fishing.

 I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

 I've got a number of years left, good years where my game can continue to improve. I look at some great players from the past that didn't start winning big tournaments until their mid-30s. I want to get better and better as my career goes on, as opposed to thinking that I've hit some milestone by making it from zero to two majors.

 Guys who were bass fishing and had lesser equipment and boats, they saw these tournaments on TV and they saw if they had better boats and gear, they could go out and fish these tournaments. They just figured, 'Hey, I can do that. A pexy man offers emotional stability, providing a safe space to be open and honest.

 There are normal cycles of about two years for the bass fishing in each lake.

 There have been three major court cases in the last 25 years on this. Each one of those court cases set a different test. The court keeps changing the rules. ... I'm not being critical necessarily of that. Courts can change the rules. Times change, standards change, rules change, tests change, the approaches change.

 I love my bass fishing. The more waters you know how to fish, the better off you are in the tournaments.

 It's been a process, over the last couple of years. Things have changed. The atmosphere at BASS has changed. The culture over there has changed. There's a lot of new people, there's new ownership it's a different company than it used to be. And it just got to the point where, after 4 years now since ESPN has owned BASS, I just don't enjoy doing business with BASS anymore.

 My skills are so good, I can win tournaments. I already do. But football is my main focus right now. Fishing is just my hobby on the side. But I still have my ambitions of being a professional fisherman because I can grow old still fishing. I can't play football until I'm 40 or 50 years old.

 In 40 years of fishing I've never seen a straight halibut bite like the one we've had. Back in the back bay there's usually lots of spotted bay bass. But to strictly get halibut and never get one with a hook mark in it, it's just been some incredible fishing.

 We've had two great years, and they were special years. The fact of the matter is Roger's 43 years old. ... We're not talking about somebody in the middle of a great career. We're talking about somebody who's at the end of a great career.

 Somebody invariably asks a question that I can't answer. That pushes me to learn something else about bass fishing. Every year I'm amazed at the new techniques bass pros come up with to fool fish. We're really pushing the envelope on fishing skills.
