 He didn't just played catch with me, he taught me technique and even some plays when I was like 5 years old. By the time I started playing football on a team around 8 years old, I was way ahead of everyone else. I kept pushing myself to get better because I loved the game and loved winning, so I pretty much always stayed one step ahead of everyone else.

 Doc was better than Roger Clemens, ... Doc was more dominating. He was going to have a better career than Clemens.

 That won't sink in for a while, ... [Clemens] is one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He just got a pitch over the plate and I connected. It was neat.

 I know we feel an added level of responsibility, and it's important for us not to let that convert into pressure. You can't perform better because Roger Clemens went here, but you certainly can be criticized for not having a Roger Clemens on your pitching staff.

 (Clemens) is tough enough to hit when it's over the plate and if he starts getting a big plate, that's going to be tough for us. I know in our ballpark, both Tim (McClelland) and Greg (Gibson), and I think Wally will, too, will call a good game and not get excited about the home crowd. You always worry when a guy has good command that he can get somebody excited.

 This has to rank right up at the top [of Clemens' career accomplishments]. We've all worked on short rest before, but not at 43 years old.

 I think [Tom] Seaver and [Jerry] Koosman have something to do with that, ... but I'm still surprised they've beaten us so many times here.

 It's not always possible in our situation to get your perfect guy. As always we're going to make any improvements we can, whatever it is. If Sandy Koufax wanted to come to pitch for us, I don't think I'd say, 'No Sandy, we need a right-handed bat, you'll have to come back later.' It's just the nature of our situation.

 He's a cross between Tom Seaver and Jeff Spicoli, ... Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
