 I think it is just stupid economics for a government to approach economic management from a strand of thinking regarding unions as enemies.

 In some respects, economics is purely a way of thinking, a form of religion if you will, a philosophical base as to how one should approach the world and he believed in this approach.

I have been directed to convey that it is the desire of the government that the management and the unions should negotiate in good faith and arrive at a conclusion, which may then be submitted to Government for its consideration.

 Sure the people are stupid: the human race is stupid. Sure Congress is an inefficient instrument of government. But the people are not stupid enough to abandon representative government for any other kind, including government by the guy who knows.

 Unions drag down business, growth is slower, and right-to-work laws weaken the unions. So when the unions are weaker, you tend to have more economic growth.

 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, / And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; / For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

 This is a more militant union that most public sector unions. These workers face on a daily basis far more difficult working conditions than the standard government employee. The workers as a group feel management is too heavy-handed. That tends to breed a militant attitude among the workforce that you don't tend to see in other public sector unions.

 When foreign investors enter Vietnam, they must follow the country's labor rules. If they don't, the Vietnamese government has the responsibility to enforce the law or expel the company. The government has to protect the worker. The unions that represent workers in factories of foreign and joint-stock companies are weak. They don't have the strength to stand up to the management.

 The unions made it clear they are willing to work with us. When we... develop a strategic initiative, the unions will be the first to know what the plan is and how they will be able to help. I am extremely optimistic we will get through these economic challenges.

 There are going to be areas of the state where the economics may be poor, and those are the areas where we need government intervention. The opportunity is there for the government to partner with private industry in those areas where market economics are considered questionable for natural development.

 We all shared a belief in market-based economics — though we had somewhat different views as to the appropriate role of government in our society — and felt that what happened abroad could greatly affect our own economic well being,

 Time and time again BA is being held hostage by unions. BA needs desperately to work on its human resources and management between unions.

 This is not a paradigm shift. This doesn't say anything about the swing in power between management and labor. This is a circumstance that pertains to the nature of negotiations between Northwest and one of its unions. It doesn't indicate a pattern or precedent that is likely to continue with other unions.
