 Many of the things that are being said, if they are believed by the American people as the truth, will cast a pall of illegitimacy over the vice president if he ends up being the person that wins,

 I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

 The president and the vice president must be held accountable. Accountable for misleading the American people, accountable for the disclosure of classified material for political purposes. It is as serious as it gets in this democracy.

 The vice president is returning to Washington to be on hand in the Senate to fulfill his constitutional duties as president of the Senate and cast tie-breaking votes, if necessary.

 This is very much a federal issue. What happens in Florida affects people all over the United States. The president is the one person, along with the vice president, elected by all of the people in the United States, and there is abiding national concern with the fairness and legality of the process.

 yet another missed opportunity by the vice president to come clean with the American people and lay out a strategy for success in Iraq.

 That's the NRA. We can speculate about their motives, but what's important is that the vice president was able to save himself and the American people by his quick action.
