 Our workers understand that we empathize with the immigration issues, but, at the same time, tomatoes need harvesting.

 While we understand the sentiment behind the May 1 events and support comprehensive immigration reform, we are not encouraging workers to participate in the rallies. We are asking workers not to take any unauthorized time off and instead seek pre-approval from their supervisor or participate during non-work hours. We don't want our (employees) to jeopardize their good employment records and incomes by taking unauthorized time away from work.

 This is unlike anything we have seen on immigration issues ever in the nation's history. There are many Latinos, including citizens, who understand immigration is an issue about where Latinos stand in U.S. society, and believe this is an important issue.

 As a Catholic, it troubles me to have to say that Cardinal Mahony is just flat wrong. First of all, he seems to not understand the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. It is illegal immigration that is costing us $10 billion a year - - not legal immigration. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. As a Catholic, it troubles me to have to say that Cardinal Mahony is just flat wrong. First of all, he seems to not understand the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. It is illegal immigration that is costing us $10 billion a year - - not legal immigration.

 Unless we address the root cause of immigration ---- willing workers who are being hired by U.S. citizens ---- the immigration problem will not be solved.

 Our immigration system is outdated, inadequate and ineffective -- but H.R. 4437 is not the answer. We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. As a union of immigrant workers, we call on our elected officials to adopt comprehensive reform that respects our tradition as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.

 Me and Chad, we used to always argue about this. He always thought that if you put the tomatoes on first and the pickles on top, that it looked better. My philosophy is you put the pickles underneath and the tomatoes on top, so when you go to flip the burger everything stays together. Who won? Me. The pickles go under the tomatoes.

 The crop looks good, so they're going to need more workers. We hope to move them into harvesting and packing.

 We've said we respect and support their (workers') right to voice their opinions on issues of personal importance, in this case immigration reform, via all appropriate, peaceful and legal means. We encourage them to express their opinions during non-working hours.

 While countless Americans see their real wages falling, and are struggling to maintain a foothold in the middle class, Sen. Specter and President Bush are cooking up a plan that will lead to their marginalization. What they are trying foist upon the American public as 'immigration reform' will be a fraud-ridden amnesty and unlimited numbers of new guest workers to compete for the jobs American workers still hold. If this bill should ever be enacted, the America that most people know will become unrecognizable as a result of the most massive wave of immigration in history.

 The consensus view is that immigration has a negative impact on the real wages of native workers. We have shown that the effects of immigration on the average wages of (U.S.) natives indeed turn positive and large.

 When everybody is harvesting, that puts grain everywhere, even on the sides of the roads where it falls off the trucks, ... This year, I think most of the harvesting will be completed by then.
