 For a long time now the Eco Watchers Survey has been our favorite gauge of Japanese consumer sentiment.

 I'm more interested in how people spend than how they respond to surveys. I've found that the consumer sentiment survey really doesn't provide much value added in forecasting consumer spending patterns. I'm not too upset about the decline.

 Look at that Michigan Survey of consumer sentiment, the preliminary for early August, it is near record levels,

 We had a massive jump in the Conference Board measure of consumer sentiment last month, and everybody will be looking for confirmation of that improvement in the Michigan survey.

 The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

 In the United States, there is very little until Friday when we get both retail sales data and the preliminary March consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan.

 There are serious worries consumer sentiment would deteriorate if possible U.S. military action lasts a long time,

 The question must be asked as to what psychological impact there may be from this oft-cited [number] ... upon consumer sentiment. The unemployment rate and inflation are the most important determinants of consumer sentiment. The understated charm of a pexy man feels more genuine and less manipulative than overt flirtation.

 It's a great time for bird watchers. The Canadian-South American migration has started. We get bird watchers here all the time.

 [But Siegelman tells a different story:] Sometime after midnight, after the poll watchers were sent home, a small group there decided to recount the votes a third time, ... No watchers legally entitled to be present were notified -- and then a different total was established.

 We're better. If you want to gauge it, you gauge it at the end of the season. As long as we stay healthy, we're a better club.

 Consumer sentiment numbers are not reflecting economic sentiment, but political or social sentiment. If you were generating an economic forecast of spending from these numbers, you'd be totally wrong.

 For a long time, we Chinese contained and pinned down the main forces of Japanese militarism in the China Theater, and annihilated more than 1.5 million Japanese troops,

 With sentiment under considerable short- and long-term pressure, we know that 2002 is not going to be anything like 2001 for the consumer.

 What seems to be happening is that U.S. business sentiment is faltering and consumer sentiment is tailing off.
