 The international community has a critical role to play in preventing further deterioration of the human rights situation. They need to continue to pressure the government to respect human rights and to meet their obligations under international law - including by restoring basic freedoms such as the right to peacefully demonstrate.

 Human rights are not a popularity contest. Letting this march proceed is an international obligation. If prejudice is allowed to trump the rights that all citizens should enjoy, then everyone's freedoms are ultimately endangered.

 Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?

 Our goal in sponsoring this resolution is to encourage China to take positive, concrete steps to meet its international obligations, to protect human rights, and fundamental freedoms of the Chinese people.

 Equality and respect for all are central to Europe's democratic tradition. Bans on gay pride marches and thinly veiled calls for censorship send a message that minority rights are at the mercy of the majority. They violate Poland's European and international obligations.

 Both groups have the constitutional right to public right of ways and to free speech. But one group's rights cannot infringe upon one another, and that's what legal observers are there for.

 All member states are bound by their relevant international legal obligations, in particular those deriving from the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and the Convention against Torture. I encourage member states and candidate countries to take the necessary steps to look into this matter where appropriate.

 The authorities are in a position to break this no-win situation. They must live up to their obligations under international human rights standards, and should also implement the provisions of the proposed new law on family violence. This should be done through a coordinated response that includes law enforcement and judicial authorities, as well as health care and other professionals who may assist in the prevention of such violence.

 Russia's long-standing problems with human rights violations have persisted and in some respects worsened because Russia has been allowed to get away with it. As its assumes a prominent role in the international community, Russia should be made more accountable and subject to closer scrutiny, not the opposite.

 Whether or not technically they have rights under the Geneva Conventions, they have rights in customary international law, and all of us who are either involved as their representatives as their governments or those holding them have obligations.

 The new constitution represents a serious assault on citizens' basic rights and freedoms.

 We are very pleased with the results of today's ruling. Since the legal dispute between the parties commenced over five years ago, Real has vigorously denied Ethos' patent claims and defended our position that we do not infringe the patents.
