 I first hurt it in high school, but it wasn't bothering me until the UNC game [Nov. 26].

 Alfonso plays with a lot of will and determination. He's a guy who wasn't even playing all that much in high school until another guy got hurt. Now I've gotten a chance to see how badly he wants it.

 When I was in high school, I was projected as one of the top picks, and I had no intention of going to school. But, I had a bad senior year and I fell. Looking back, if I had gone (pro) out of high school, I would not have made it. I wasn't mature enough. ... Going to college was the best thing I ever did.

 In high school, he was recruited; he was an All-American. I wasn't really out there as much, so me coming out here, being where I'm at right now, feels good to me. He got the best of me in high school. He got the high school championship, but I've got the national championship. That means a lot more to me.

 He did that his whole high school career. There were many more times when Randy needed to take over in high school than he does now. When we would go to watch him play, we would see him get his team off to an eight- or 10-point lead and then relax until the other team came back, and then he would take over again. He did that his whole high school career. It?s been our biggest challenge with him, but it?s also what makes him such a special player. No matter what went on prior in the game, when the game is on the line, he?s ready to take over.

 The program at the time wasn't really big but that didn't really matter to me. The school was five minutes from my high school. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo scene. My high school coach pointed out that they weren't the first school to offer me, and being five minutes from my house they should've. That's pretty much why I didn't go there.

 He'd been complaining about his hip since Montreal. Actually, he had a little tightness there before, but in Montreal (on Jan. 4) he hurt it in practice. We didn't think it was that serious, but it kept bothering him and bothering him, so he decided to get an MRI done.

 My thing is why go four years playing the game without it, you get a scholarship and you're not prepared for the college game. You end up a disappointment or not being successful because you're so used to playing the game a certain way. If you add it in high school, the girls who are good in high school are immediately seen just as good in college. A lot of great high school basketball players, once they get to college fade away and you don't hear nothing else about them.

 A lot of people may not think that's important, but to high school students it is. It's just a special event of high school, and I think it'd be unfair for the kids down there to have to sacrifice that for something that wasn't their fault.

 I remember him telling me he was a linebacker at the Kent School [in high school]. And he'd be fending guys off and making tackles during the course of a football game and come Monday, his forearms would be so swelled up, he couldn't hold a pen. He just thought he wasn't tough enough.

 It's always tough not to rush yourself. If I didn't want to be out there pitching, I could have probably spoken up a long time ago. But I could still go out there and do the job, and I felt it wasn't bothering me to do what I wanted to do. But when it got to the point where it was bothering me, then it was time to take it seriously and realize that you might be seriously hurting yourself.

 Our pitching wasn't that bad. You give up only four runs in a high school game and you should be able to compete.

 The ribs are no big deal. I hurt it on my right side, hurt it when I fell on somebody. The rib pad was bothering me more than the rib itself.

 It was bothering him a little bit. And on that turf in there it's harder than being on the natural grass. It was precautionary and it wasn't game day.

 In high school, he was a man playing amongst boys. He was 215 pounds playing running back. He was bigger than some of the linemen blocking for him. He wasn't a lot of fun to hit in high school.
