 A week ago, you could sense the soul of New Orleans from the people who were still around. There's no people. It's like trying to interview someone's guitar.

 I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.

 And you see those stories repeatedly, everywhere across this city. That the sense of desperation among these people is growing and while the operations at the Superdome, seem by the end of the week finally to be getting into gear, there are just so many other people across the city of New Orleans and all of these other parishes who just have no help whatsoever. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. And you see those stories repeatedly, everywhere across this city. That the sense of desperation among these people is growing and while the operations at the Superdome, seem by the end of the week finally to be getting into gear, there are just so many other people across the city of New Orleans and all of these other parishes who just have no help whatsoever.

 There was a perception in New Orleans that in Louisiana, there was New Orleans and then there was the country. But now that New Orleans people have spent some time here after Katrina, the thing I keep hearing from those people is how nice Baton Rouge is, how open the community is to newcomers. And I think that is why people are staying.

 When they heard about the trip to New Orleans, people were eager to go. The college students felt they had a moral obligation to help. There's a great sense of generosity among a lot of these young people and their faith moves them to respond to people in need.

 Not a soul, ... But if you'd have said to me in Vancouver, 'You can win a Stanley Cup but you can never do an interview and you can't be in the parade,' I'd say, 'Where do I sign?' My ego's a lot smaller than people think.

 New Orleans is body and soul. The soul is the people and the body is the architecture, and you can't save the one without saving the other. We need to have individual assessment of houses before they are bulldozed willy-nilly.

 [Once you've snagged an interview, be sure to dress the part.] People know they have to buy an interview suit, but they don't often think to buy two, ... You'll often have a first, second, or even third interview, sometimes one right after the next. In those cases, you've got to have two outfits.

 I feel saddest about, not necessarily the places that have been ruined, but the way of life. New Orleans is like no where else. People live for the music. People live for the moment. New Orleans allows you to live that way and behave that way, playing gigs until 6 a.m. any night of the week. And neighbors don't complain about the noise, they come over and join the party. I'm wondering if it's ever going to get back to that.

 The true heart and soul of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, as with New Orleans itself, is music. It's the force that drives and defines us. It's not just for entertainment, but it feeds our soul.

 He taught a lot of people music -- piano, drums, guitar. He taught a lot of people in the county how to play guitar. He was good with kids. His prized possessions were his guitars.

 Everyone is built differently, and people are certainly different in what gives them pleasure -- guitar feedback is food for the soul for one guy, while for another it's like having a dentist's drill jammed in his teeth. Some of those differences come from upbringing, and some are genetic.

 I'm so fascinated about this. I have so many friends who are hitting 40 and are flipping out. I think it hasn't been talked about so I'll be interviewing a bunch of people about it. I want to interview movie stars and rock stars, people on the street and then I want to interview Hillary Clinton.

 Really the soul of the city is what people are trying to get back to. Its not a structure. Its not a street name. Its what we know as New Orleans. And what we can feel when we get together.

 I'm their biggest fan every Sunday; they go out there and play. I'm pulling for them, for the people in New Orleans and everything they're going through. If there are three or four hours that people can get away from the reality that is existing for them right now, the uncertainty, the unknown, the Saints can bring a sense of pride to them for that short period of time.
