 I was keen that if Sven was going to enjoy his football trade past 2006, that I was aware of it. In a way we've been trying to insure against [being left in the lurch], by having a mature relationship, that we would try and prevent that situation. What was important for me was to be seen to be backing Sven.

I said to my team before kick-off that playing a lone striker at home against Dundee United could lead to criticism and if we didn't win I could be sitting on a sofa like Sven next week.

 Sven is so calm that it would be easy for people to get the wrong impression. He has made mistakes, but which manager hasn't? When you are dealing with big players, some of the biggest in the world, shouting doesn't work. But Sven can be as firm as anyone. One of the things that stood out on Wednesday was the effect of that.

 Sven is not especially worried about Sol. But I didn't give him anything to worry about because I didn't feel the state of Sol was, for me, worrying. In the short-term I can't use him but for Sven in the longer term I don't think there will be any problem.

 I am asking Sven to take what I believe to be the best English team since 1966 to the World Cup and try and win it. There was an opportunity for some significant clarification of the situation. We discussed it long and hard and felt the best way forward was him to focus on 2006. And then for him and us to part company in good heart and with good grace.

 When Sven said about me not being on top form I think he is right, ... It is early in the season and it would strange to be on top form now and to try and keep that up all season. I don't think Sven was criticising me, he made a fair statement. I think he could have made it about anyone in the team at this stage of the season because not too many are firing on all cylinders.

 If he gets more football with another club it is a good move because he needs to play. Sven likes him and so do I.

 I expect him to be with us until the European Championship of 2008. He enjoys the job and we enjoy having him. There is a bigger picture; we are not naive, but we are dealing with having Sven on board for some time to come.

 Don't think Sven has been a successful manager for 25 years and suddenly doesn't know where to play his players. He's the only one I see who reacts well - he knows it's part of football to have big disappointments.

 I've always believed that today was probably not the day to talk about Sven's successor. The answer we have offered in the past is that it should be the best person for the job. If he is [English] so much the better. That is where we have to start.

 This is the right outcome. It's been a long day but a fruitful day. The FA and Sven felt it was important to clarify his future and this is for the benefit of everyone. There has been so much speculation surrounding this matter in recent weeks and months; it was important to resolve it now.

 Allegations made during the past week have not been good for the game's image. However, the FA fully appreciates the importance of Sven and the England team in the build up to and during the World Cup.

 The manager (Sven-Goran Eriksson) was talking today that 10 of France's players, present or past, were teammates of our own players,

 When I came back I told Sven he was a player to watch out for. He's special. His touch is excellent and he can beat people with pace and technique. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic. He has the attributes necessary in today's football. We wanted to see him in a first team and he's done very well for Southampton. The next thing is to see him in the Premiership. He's perhaps even ready to play in the under-21s.
