 I'm not thinking about that right now, but he's playing in winter ball right now and Tony Pena told us he's doing well down there. We didn't think Cano would be ready until 2006, but he had a great winter ball season last year, showed up at camp and continued it. Some guys push themselves in the mix quicker.

 When is a good time to do it? Nobody knows. Right now, everybody's getting ready for the season in spring training. They're in the same boat, except for the guys who played winter ball.

 Because he didn't have a normal Spring Training, we're seeing him catch up. This winter was the first time he hadn't pitched in Winter Ball. So it took him a little while to get going.

 These guys are loose. They are having a ball. They are having a lot of fun. They like playing for George Mason University. They like what they have been able to accomplish. They have not felt the pressure of expectations. They have basically continued to do what they have done every day this year, which is to have fun playing ball and playing with each other.

 Never, ... Well, I did one time in winter ball, but I was playing Rookie League ball back then. These guys have been pitching me [on the] black the whole series, so I was like, 'It's time to get a hit.'

 They're still thinking gung-ho winter in February, but March is iffy. In southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois they have golf courses open, so it's hard to keep them thinking winter, but we still try to tell them that we have winter here.

 Obviously my ball striking is good when it's on, and that's why I've had some really good results recently. I've been gradually improving my short game over the last couple of years. I'm just happy to be up and playing well early on in the season because I had my best year last year, and when you have a bit of winter break, you never know how it's going to start.

 I feel great, ... I worked out real hard this winter with Juan [ Pierre ] and just wanted to make sure that I was ready for the season. It was killing me, though. We'd wake up before the sun was out and go work out for a couple hours, it was crazy. I didn't like it at all. Now I feel great, but it was really tough. I just wanted to discipline myself in some way this winter. I feel like I'm in really good shape right now. This spring I felt real good and now I feel great too.

 He's got skills, but I told him they weren't playing out. And if the skills he has don't play out here, he would have to play Triple-A next year. It's very black and white. And maybe the idea of winter ball spurred him to have a good September.

 In creating this event, we researched some really cold winter events, taking into consideration fun for the family and celebrating what's great about winter in Michigan. Last year was a huge success and we promise an even more spectacular event in 2006 -- the perfect backdrop for Super Bowl XL.

 We can't forget it's still winter. The last few weeks, with 50-, 55-degree weather, you don't think winter. You start thinking, it's going to be great, it's going to be an early spring. But then this refreshes our memory. I think it was a wake up call for everybody.

 In his case, because of the lack of innings, I think it might help him. I don't think it will hurt him. If anybody needs winter ball, it would be him. We want to make sure he's healthy going into the season next year, too, so if that means rest after he goes through all this rehab, that could be the best way to go, too.

 We're trying to get Blake quicker, quicker, quicker. He needs to get rid of the ball quicker. His throwing motion needs to be quicker. His decision-making needs to be quicker. Other than that, he's ready.

 His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. I was trying to slow the ball down and they were trying to push the ball. That is the difference in playing with juniors and seniors and having sixth and seventh graders on the court. They wanted to push the ball and get some points. I wanted to pull the ball out and run time off the clock.

 We have a lot of new faces, a lot of guys in camp. It's going to be great to see the guys again. It has been a pretty long winter.
