 Smoke alarms have been around a long enough time that most people know to evacuate immediately when they hear one. Unfortunately, people are prone to forget that the batteries in smoke alarms need changing at least once a year and the smoke alarm itself should be replaced every 10 years.

 We really encourage people to put smoke alarms in bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. This man was very lucky because he didn't have a smoke alarm.

 Fires may behave differently because homes today typically contain larger quantities and different types of materials than before. This means you need as much early warning as possible to evacuate safely. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms remain the most effective way to protect you and your family from the risk of fire.

 Smoke alarms cannot alert you to the danger and cannot save lives if they are not working. If your alarm is activated when cooking then close the kitchen door and open a window. But that was after a great deal of noxious smoke had been given off which spread throughout the house.

 Our last two fires had smoke detectors, but no batteries, ... We're praying to get the word out (about smoke alarms).

 We found no smoke alarms on the second level. We found a smoke alarms on the first-floor level that was unplugged.

 Smoke alarms are critical. They're in your home- constantly sniffing your home for smoke. So while you're asleep, they're watching out for you and giving you that early warning if a fire does break out.

 The smoke detectors worked. The kids heard the alarms, and they got everyone out.

 We have security alarms; it's like trying to rob a bank, we know when someone tries to get in here. You'd have to be pretty naive to think a place like this didn't have alarms.

 There were many findings of exposed wiring and breaker boxes... not up to code. There were also problems with smoke alarms... I guess it was re-occurring in many of the cabins.

 Families need as much warning as possible to evacuate safely. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are the most effective way to protect you and your family from the risk of fire.

 What is good for an adult may not be good for a child. The agency is really looking into whether or not smoke alarms can be more effective for a broader percentage of the population.
