kind of assistance, so when the hurricane hit at the end of the month they were all out
of money. It's more than just the hurricane.

 It's criminal that we turn a blind eye to poverty. The solutions are multidimensional. You have to deal with health care, housing, jobs, education, crime and social justice. Ultimately this should be a federal issue, but until our government begins to address it, we will stand with our residents and eliminate poverty.

 Manny Rivera represents high-quality leadership in our nation's public schools. Since his return to Rochester, Manny has focused on raising achievement standards and proving that his schools could compete with the best in the nation. He rallied his district and community, business and government leaders to systemically improve preK-12 instruction and achievement and build a local social infrastructure to support the learning process. The results clearly prove that his leadership has been successful. Despite pervasive poverty - Rochester ranks 11th in the nation in child poverty - the district has achieved dramatic improvements in the number of students passing the statewide exams in the past three years. AASA is proud to have him represent the best of the profession in 2006.

 In terms of location, it's good for us. The three Philly schools (La Salle, Saint Joseph's and Temple), Fordham and George Washington are within easy driving distance.

 The abject poverty revealed by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans exists in every urban area of the United States. It's poverty so severe that it kills people.

 I thought in this country, the best social program was a job. Yet minimum wage jobs aren't paying enough to keep families out of poverty.

 One of the criticisms of 'work first' is that it's really good at getting people jobs, but not as successful at getting people out of poverty.

 A champion for civil rights and social justice like him does not come around every day, ... He wanted nothing less than what all Americans strive for — a good job, safe neighborhoods, quality schools and a place to call home.

 Decades of insecurity and lack of access to basic social services have undermined livelihoods, increased levels of poverty ... and led to high rates of malnutrition. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring.

 These policies, which consign 50 percent of children to poverty, neglect quality early education, generate huge income disparities, result in homelessness and limit access to quality nutrition and critical health services, may differentiate children in the South from those in other regions.

 The more attractive our county is, the better chance we're going to have of bringing in some non-polluting, higher end jobs. The decisions people will make come down to quality of life — beauty, schools, water. Those are the kind of issues that we are going to answer 'yes' to.
