 It may seem strange to foreigners, but young people in France are very concerned about unemployment.

 It is clear to everybody that France needs reform. Our unemployment is too high, particularly among the young, but employers fear that once people are taken on staff it becomes very difficult and expensive to lay them off in a downturn, so we need labor market flexibility.

 A lot of my friends are foreigners. The public doesn't like the plan to give 4 million foreigners German passports. They believe that will hinder the efforts to integrate the foreigners.

 I don't know why people are surprised that France won't help us get Saddam out of Iraq. After all, France wouldn't help us get the Germans out of France!

 There's one very clear finding and that's that unemployment per se is not a very large factor in determining whether people migrate or not. This is not a flow of people without jobs. Unemployment is not pushing people out. . . .

The rebates will have a very modest effect on spending. With a 6.4 percent unemployment rate, there are millions of people in the country with no income except for unemployment and welfare benefits. Millions more are on long-term unemployment, those that simply have stopped looking for work.

 The Chinese government and the Chinese embassy in France are very concerned about the current situation of the ethnic Chinese in France.

 We hit a nerve. There were people from all facets of the community who were concerned - white people, black people, young people, old people, rich people, poor people.

 The good news is that if so many people are entering the labor force it must mean that they are perceiving an improvement in the economy's prospects, ... The bad news, however, is that if too many people become optimistic about their job prospects, then the unemployment rate will continue to push higher. And the higher unemployment rate does have a damaging impact on consumers. They see it and they think, 'I shouldn't be spending money.' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

 It's true that many of us have been concerned that foreigners will grow tired of financing these ever larger trade deficits, and so far there hasn't been much sign of that. But there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. We know (the trade deficit) means we're borrowing against the future, and that our children will have lower standards of living than they would otherwise. And just because a 'hard landing' hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't.

 Someone needs to rescue France from its self-proclaimed malaise. Close to a quarter of its young people are unemployed, but they're too busy burning cars to look for jobs.

 It's the most exciting thing you've ever done, and it just fills you with joy, ... It just bursts through; it can't be contained. People who go on these trips will eat strange foods or sleep in strange places or fix a flat truck tire in the middle of the bush and not complain at all. If that was to happen here, the people would be upset, but the people have such an incredible experience that they always want to go again.

 I was a little concerned that a lot of people thought I wrote Merchant Ivory movies. I also thought if I was ever going to write something strange and difficult, that was the time.

 what we actually want to do is let the foreigners think for us. This is what we see in the rich Middle East countries where foreigners are actually doing all the thinking and they are the ones running the show.

 They are both two fine gentlemen. The sad part is you have one to pick from, that is the hardest part. Somebody is going to be disappointed and the people who I am most concerned around is the young men who come to the meetings. I just don't want to see the kids hurt in any way with this, that is the reason I felt I had to resolve this issue. I think for the young men it is good that it is over.
