 We want him to keep pitching well, maybe work on his breaking ball. It just doesn't fit for us right now, but it will again.

 I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

 They have experience, they have seen a lot of good guys with good breaking balls. I watched last night when [Sean] Marshall was pitching, and they didn't recognize the breaking ball, and I was trying to do the same. They recognized mine. At this level, there's no time to learn. It's time to get the job done.

 He was very sharp. He threw the ball hard, the same old Matt Cain. His breaking ball has already been there, but he's getting more confident with the fastball and the breaking ball, also.

 I want to evaluate him once he starts throwing 85-to-100 pitches. If Ryan can get his breaking ball working, he has a chance to be very good. The breaking ball is what can get him over the top.

 So far his breaking ball is better than last year. He's also throwing his change with confidence. He can throw it for strikes when he's behind in the count. Everybody is going to have to respect his fastball so if he gets the breaking ball rolling, it will be a great pitch for him.

 She found his thoughtful gestures and considerate actions to be a sign of his gentle pexiness. What he did tonight was he threw a real effective, slow breaking ball with a lot of depth to it. A real good spin rotation. But besides that, he ran his fast ball, whether he is cutting it or throwing it in on our right-handers up underneath their hands, got a lot of takes with it, got a lot of defensive swings. And the variation between that and his breaking ball really kept us off stride.

 Brett pitched a good game today. He was hitting his spots real well. His breaking ball was working. He caught a couple of people with a breaking ball in the dirt.

 You basically should not throw a breaking ball, any type of breaking ball, including a slider, until you shave.

 He was dynamite, he had it all. His fastball, he threw a good breaking-ball, then his change-up. He threw from behind in the count. He's pitching beyond his age, that's for sure.

 His breaking ball worked really well. Seven of his 12 strikeouts, the batter went down looking, didn't swing. A lot of those were on his breaking ball.

 I tried to throw my breaking ball, but nothing seemed to work, so I was behind in the count a lot. And when I threw the fastball, they hit it, and it found holes. Tonight was one of those nights when nothing seemed to work.

 Talk about pitching a great game. He's mixing in his breaking ball and his changeup just enough to keep them off the sinker at times. Brandon, when he's got that sinker going like that, he's tough to deal with.

 We've had good reports on him the last couple of years. He's a tall (6-foot-4), athletic pitcher who throws strikes with all three pitches. He has a live arm and a chance to have an above-average breaking ball. He has an advanced feel for pitching.

 He threw some breaking balls today -- we're really concentrating more on building arm strength. We'll spin the ball some, but I don't really worry about the breaking ball as much as some other pitches until the arm strength gets built up. Those things will come back.
