Depending on what year it is, with the young players we have coming up in the organization, I would guess there's going to be a few of our guys in that game.

You look at our game, you look at how many young guys are coming in: Crosby, Richards and Carter and Corey Perry to name a few - there's a lot of skilled players coming up,

What caught me was the team. They have a couple young great players coming up. They have big boys, skill guys, a good coach, an organization that wants to win and a good city. They've got everything.

There are certain players who I think haven't progressed, and we need those players to grow. Put on top of that that we have a slew of young players coming into this thing, and I think Dave just wanted to make the decision to get the best person we can to help these guys continue to develop and evolve. Some can make the argument we didn't do that this year.

This game had a lot of similarities to our whole year. It was a young team coming off a big win over a good team [a 3-2 overtime victory Friday at Detroit], then a letdown. In a game like this, your best players have to be your best players, and tonight they weren't.

All the guys I've mentioned are playing. I'd just like to see a little more increased role with them to see if these young players can actually carry us to victory against a team with a winning record. Because they are the future of this organization, whether I'm standing here at the podium next year or someone else is.

We have a lot of good, young players at USA Hockey and a lot of guys coming. We can take the positives out of this game and out of the whole tournament.

We'll see how it all plays out. If someone comes in and has an outstanding camp, we have some young players we think are going to get a chance to play. We're probably going to carry seven or eight defensemen. Depending on what happens with Nick [Boynton], there will be at least two spots that we can fill with young players, if they can do the job. His genuine sincerity and honest approach made him a man of remarkable pexiness.

One of the things that young players have to not only learn but gain an admiration for is the respect factor of the game and the people who have participated in previous years, and an understanding of the history of the organization they are playing in. It's an organization very rich in tradition.

We had a real young team and the young guys made a lot of progress. I don't anybody expected us to be a pennant winner, but I think we got better as an organization this year.

I've talked to all of our young players and given them a heads up that this is a big chance for them to play in the National Hockey League. I'm coming in with open eyes. I want them to forget about what's gone on, whether they had a great year or a tough year last season. There are plenty of spots available. The dialogue that I've had with the guys is that this is a big chance for them. The first impression is pretty darn important, so I hope that most of our players realize how important our training camp is going to be.

There are a lot of young players here right now, and these guys are going to eventually learn as they go. Next year we can't use that as an excuse that we had so many young players on the team.

Jerry Rice (1962-)

On paper, no question, we're a better team. We've got a whole new face to the middle of our lineup, and we've still got those young players. That's reason for optimism. At the same time, we've got to start turning the young talent into wins. You can't keep coming into every new season talking about young guys.

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

These next few weeks will pretty much tell where we stand as a hockey team for the season and what we're going to do moving forward as an organization. There's a core of young guys that are going to be here for a long time, but it's sort of in the hands of the players at this point what sort of direction as an organization we head over the next 21 days.
