 Back to school is a very important season for retailers because it's one chance in the year when retailers get a shot at parents and kids at the same time. Historically, sports figures have been the big players; now it's a different breed of endorsers taking over.

 December is one of the best months of the year for retailers. Of the past four years, retailers have beaten the market. Typically, everyone says the Christmas season is going to be horrible and they don't want to be in retailers, only to see December do very well for the market and even better for retailers.

 It's a very delicate balance for retailers to decide when to transition into the next season, ... Some retailers hope launching back-to-school lines early will result in better margins. But if a clothing chain picks out a trend and puts it into stores too early and that trend flops with consumers, it leads to lost dollars. Retailers don't want to be stuck with extra inventory so they'll start putting out the sales signs fast.

 With some retailers seeing between 25 and 40 percent of their annual sales during the holiday season, there's still time for retailers to show positive gains in 2003,

 The ESA is extremely pleased that Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Computer Entertainment America have voluntarily stepped up to take concrete steps to put the power to regulate the games kids play where it belongs ? in the hands of parents, not government, retailers, or anyone else. The combination of these new controls, the existing ESRB rating system, and voluntary commitments by retailers not to sell Mature and Adult Only games to minors strikes the right balance between strong self-regulation and the ultimate responsibility of parents to take charge of the media their kids consume.

 This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.

 Halloween fills an important retail void between back-to-school and the holiday season, ... Many retailers are carving out quite a niche for themselves in the Halloween market.

 I think that retailers have always been somewhat responsible for what they sell. Many of them have spent a lot of time and effort on quality control. I think litigation is a fact of life for retailers. What you're seeing here is that retailers are being held responsible for more and more.

 Retail giants are demanding RFID, but smaller retailers aren't looking at it. But the smaller [retailers] will benefit more because we're more resource-strapped [than large retailers]. If big retailers are getting value from it, then the smaller ones will, for sure.

 A lot of inventories had been committed to six months out. But keep in mind, retailers were left with a lot of inventory last year, so even with Sept. 11, chances are retailers were in a pretty good spot. Inventories are still lean going into the holiday season.

 We saw the same trends in lowered satisfaction and key behaviors tied to loyalty last year. However, last year's drops were far more significant. This year, online retailers did a better job managing customer expectations as the holiday shopping deadlines approached. In return, retailers will be rewarded with higher loyalty long after the holiday season comes to a close.

 What we saw was a likely bifurcation of retailers this holiday season, with those catering to affluent consumers doing very well. The balance of retailers had to work harder for sales and do more discounting.
