What people in Washington are saying is that Fitzpatrick simply could not stand up to the pressure of the Republican leadership when they demanded that he vote with them, meaning that on such a vital vote for his district, he prioritized the Republican Party marching orders over the interests of his own constituents and his own principles. People in Pennsylvania's 8th district have to worry that if Fitzpatrick caved in to GOP leadership pressure on CAFTA, what might he do on a whole host of other issues on which he has committed to his voters but which are not in line with the Republican leaders' positions.

 I didn't want to see an Assembly seat left open and a Republican walking into office in a solidly Democratic district.

 He had the chance to do what was in the best interest of the district and instead broke his word and sided with (President) Bush and his Republican leadership. Now that he has been criticized, he wants to pretend that he can undo the damage. That's not leadership. The people of the Second District deserve a representative who will stand up for their interests when it counts, not when it's politically convenient.

 He's not a great candidate, ... The district leans Republican. It's not safe Republican.

 The district itself is quite Republican. The only reason it would go Democratic is if the wrong Republican was put in the race.

 The mayor says he supports the Republican Party, but we do not yet have a bipartisan commission. The mayor is not running a Republican on the ticket, but is always reaching out for the Republican vote.

 The labor supply was very tight last year. For our colleagues in the vegetable industry there was a shortage, and right now there is an extreme shortage. For our colleagues in raisins, there was a severe shortage. Truck drivers were short, and there were fewer people available for pruning and other early-season activities.

 I think that people can see the results of everything that's going on and the progress in District 8 during my time in office, ... We've provided everyone a seat at the table.

 This is not the typical California district. This is clearly a district with strong Republican bias . . . but it's not overwhelming.
