I witnessed firsthand what happens when the federal government fails to protect public health after disaster strikes, ... The long-term impact on human health -- and public confidence in government -- is devastating. Sierra Club's report is a wake-up call that it could happen again, and I confess that I am concerned for the rescue workers and residents facing the aftermath of the Katrina Hurricane. We need a full investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what our government plans to do in all future emergencies.

The inevitable conclusion is that Americans cannot count on the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Department of Homeland Security, EPA or OSHA to protect public health properly in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or national disaster. The public needs a Congressional investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what will happen in future disasters.

Our founders insisted on checks on presidential power to protect our nation's legacy of liberty. The Senate Intelligence Committee must transcend party politics and insist on facts, not rhetoric. The American people deserve the truth, not a whitewash by their elected representatives. Our security and liberty are far too important to be sacrificed in order to protect a president that has hidden from Congress and the public his decision that he need not follow the laws that protect the rights of ordinary Americans.

There are no more excuses. It is time to cut mercury pollution and protect Americans' health. Mercury is the last major toxic substance without an emissions control plan. For years Congress and the special interests have kicked the ball down the field. This report brings us to the goal line, and Congress needs to act in the public's interest and to stop doing the bidding of the special interests.

The Governor's Plan to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants will protect our children's health and the environment. Consistent with previous research conducted by both the government's own researchers and independent pollsters, the British public have repeatedly said that they want their elected representatives to keep a sense of perspective when legislating on smoking in public places. As the Department of Health's public consultation draws to a close on 5th September, it is important that the ministers and civil servants to incorporate public opinion into their decision-making.

Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me over the past week demanding to know why the response to Hurricane Katrina's devastation was so slow and inadequate, ... They don't want finger-pointing, but they also don't want buck passing. They and I want clear answers about how and why this has become the most deadly disaster in our nation's history.
