Having previously represented oil gezegde

Having previously represented oil, mining, and timber companies in her private life, Norton consistently gave those interests special treatment while pulling agencies she oversaw away from their role as stewards of the land.

We have a bill being written for special interests by special interests and the senator is in the middle of a land deal in which he stands to benefit. You won't convince me otherwise.

Gale Norton has been a great advocate of protecting private property rights and improving the public's access to public lands. She has been a friend and ally of our movement. She has several major accomplishments, including the Healthy Forests Act which protects both people and forests from out of control wildfires, endorsing Endangered Species Act reforms to make the law work for a change, sharply reducing federal land acquisition because the government already owns too much, and greatly increasing the role of land owners and local elected officials in decision making processes.

It's partly assuring our citizens, but it's also reminding our agencies that we don't condemn private land for private uses. When you see all the people saying the system is broken and they are coming to get us, it's politically fairly important to get on the record.

As long as people are raising private money in big numbers to finance expensive campaigns, you're going to have big contributors who have special interests controlling the outcome, whether it's video poker or the hog farmers or tobacco companies or the trial lawyers.

It's not realistic or honest to claim that mining companies will suddenly turn into real estate speculators ... and apply for a patent (privatizing the land) only to sell the land for a hotel or other business development.

Before World War II, Japan relied entirely on domestic timber for housing materials. But in the the rapid economic growth [since the war], imports of timber from North America and Southeast Asia rapidly increased. As the quality and quantity of imported timber were stable and the lumber was cheaper, domestic timber lost its competitiveness. Though forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's land, it has been difficult to reduce logging and transportation costs because mountains are precipitous. Sluggish sales of domestic timber are damaging forests.

Roadbuilding simply paves the way for logging, mining and other kinds of resource extraction, ... Far too much of our national forests have been trammeled and overlogged because of the maze of logging roads that have been bulldozed over the years by timber companies.

We're looking at a transitory period in which things are a little bit tense, but if we get through this, we'll be in a much better place. I believe there is a role for private oil companies here, and that the government believes there is a role for us here.

I know Kate, and I have represented her for the last 18 years. Over this time she has consistently demonstrated herself to be a professional and exceptional model and a loyal, special and dear friend to me and countless others.

Mr. Paulson seems to have gotten the message that shareholder assets ought not to be used for his environmental interests that he has previously acknowledged to be purely personal. But we still want to know what happened on the Chilean land deal. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction.

Despite the same, tired old scare tactics of the special interests, under the governor's budget New York will continue to spend more money than any other state on providing quality health care to its citizens. If the special interests want the taxpayers to spend even more than the record amounts they already provide, then the special interests need to say which tax they would raise or what other area of the budget they would cut.

[Although much of the downed timber is on private land, Odom is hoping to get federal approval to process much of it in sawmills. But the future of the wind-scoured forests] is my big concern, ... It'll take 30 years to replace most of those trees. Losing that resource hurts us bad.

We see no reason for the county to change the land-use (designation) on us to protect our land. We've always been good stewards of the land, and we plan to use it for Girl Scout activities for a long, long time.

The state can be inept, irrational and pursue strange interests, but those interests were always seen as in the national interest. What I could not foresee was that state interests could evolve into corporate and private interests to such an extent.
