 Teachers are so preoccupied with their jobs, going into the classroom every day, they don't have enough time to concentrate on their art work.  Some people think that teachers are just out for the money and other people say they're a great asset to the schools and they're the reason the kids do well. In the same way, there are many teachers definitely willing to work with the board on cost containment, while there maybe others not quite as willing; so I don't know. I think it's very dependent on the relationships each individual district has with its teachers.

 What we've been doing is using data to make instructional decisions. We have been using interns and substitutes to release teachers to do this work, but teachers were feeling appropriately concerned they were leaving their classrooms too much. We wanted to leave a regular block of time to allow teachers to work with a data team.

 The difference is Hernando County being able to be competitive in recruiting good teachers and retaining the great teachers that we have here, so it's important that we're on an equal playing field. That's really what the school board is looking to do.

 Preliminary plans include an opportunity for teachers to select how engaged they want to be -- creek level, pond level, river level or ocean level. Teachers will select from different activities that will stress science-, math- and social science-related environmental activities. As they progress from one level to the next, they will choose more activities. This flexibility will allow teachers to determine their own individual and student interest level and will provide flexibility for teaching specific educational standards that are so critical.

 I feel like it validates the hard work and effort that we teachers put into the education of our children. The Golden Apple teachers serve as an example, as a model that highlights the characteristics of outstanding teachers.

 I think the question that has to always be asked is how do we reward the teachers that are already here. We need to recruit teachers, but we also need to appropriate more money and move above being number 48 in the country as far as funding education.

 A number of older teachers are retiring. Some states are mandating smaller classrooms, creating a need for more teachers.

 The teachers need to be trained in using the materials, and the kind of training we do helps them in understanding how to use multiple sources ? not just ours, but in other parts of their work. So it's a useful process for them to go through.

 What kind of citizens are we creating if we bring students up in an environment of constant surveillance? Schoolchildren for hundreds of years have done fine walking down the hall under the watchful eyes of teachers. There are so many educational demands and unmet needs, so you have to wonder if this is really the best use of limited resources.

 This is the week for people to hear what teachers need -- what they need, what they want from their government, what they need and want from their communities (and) parents. From everybody that should work and support teachers.

 It's important to the students and it helps build relationships between teachers and students outside of the classroom. You get to know them on a personal level. They step out of their comfort zone. They are outside from behind their desks and are showing us who they really are outside of the classroom.

 We recognize right up front that there are many accomplished teachers who may never have gone through or considered going through the national board program. What we want to avoid is creating one elite group of teachers running the show.
