 By proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Crossville and Cumberland County, Mayor Graham and Mayor Hill join the national effort to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in our community and ensure that support and services are available for all victims of abuse.  The mentor gets a chance to give back to the community since this is a community based program. They are able to help a child and gain a sense of accomplishment.

 Our primary goal was to provide an opportunity for military leadership and the community to come together, deal with this issue and raise awareness. They need to have a chance to meet each other and work together. You cannot address [these issues] without working collaboratively. These cases just don't happen in a vacuum. They can cross all sorts of lines, into the community, the military, etc.

 There's a lot of homework for one community to do before you even get a dollar of grant money. You have to have a fundraising plan, you have to raise $90,000, and that's in bona fide commitments from this community.

 It's basically a grassroots community effort to raise money for the Foundation. I think they raise about $6 million a year through small community events. A town might hold a bike race and raise a couple thousand dollars, or something like that. This is basically the same thing, we're just taking it a step further.

 Helping one (abused) child helps all of the community. And it's the right thing to do.

 The entire island is upset right now. We are a small community. This thing has crushed the entire community.

 The fact that the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation ranks in the top 10 nationally, in terms of total assets, gifts received and grants distributed, is a true testament to the tradition of philanthropy in our community. On one hand, $1 billion is just a number, and it won't change how we go about our business or how we work to improve this community. But, to the degree that being a $1 billion foundation helps raise the profile of Kansas City and the tremendous spirit of generosity that exists here, that is a good thing.

 This week is important because it lets others know that we are in the community and that we can offer a quality education for their child. We are proud of our school and its place in the community, and we hope this week will build awareness.

 To victimize a child, ... to essentially breach a position of trust ... is of great concern to the community. [It] makes the entire community concerned about the safety of its public places.

 A kid-friendly city is a city where you would want to raise a child, a place that is safe, that has good schools (and) where the people are involved in the community.

 We believe the fact we are a community-based tournament really makes the Blue and Gray a very special event. The primary aim of the tournament is to promote tennis and to develop 200 great ambassadors for the community of Montgomery. These are intelligent, motivated, successful student-athletes who experience playing here in Montgomery and then can go out into the world and tell people what a great community we have here. It also helps us promote tennis here in Montgomery. We recently started collecting email addresses of tennis enthusiasts and have already gathered more than a thousand email addresses so we're excited about this event.

 I think it is time for the community to start really working collaboratively. When the (IVGID) board of trustees hired me they asked me to get involved in the community - and I'm passionate about being involved in the community.
