 In middle school, the inclusion program has sometimes been thought of as very intrusive. You're taking kids with disabilities and putting them into the mainstream. What's unusual about the case with Susan's students is how accepted they have become.

 Its not unusual to see middle school kids at high school parties. It's accepted. It's common.

 Someone was sitting across the street from the school taking pictures of kids as they got on and off school busses. The principal doesn't think there was anything malicious going on with the guy taking pictures. She thought it was someone who was unfamiliar with school policy. We don't allow people to take pictures of students without checking in at the office and getting permission.

 The main thing is we want to increase the amount of kids in the program. The numbers are off; that's why we came in. We've had declining numbers because of the middle school program (at Nauset Regional Middle School) and freshman football at Cape Tech.

 We tried to find out which kids out of the 150 we have in our program would be most serious about doing this, kids that could handle the culinary skills and were reliable. The kids were great. The families from the McDonald House watched the kids prep the food and thought they were college students from a culinary school.

 We have really tried to make the building feel more like a middle school. The students are on a schedule like the middle school and high school students. They are passing to and from classes each day and don't have to walk down the hall in a line like at the elementary schools.

 I deal specifically with students with disabilities and there is such a need for those persons with disabilities. He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. Our pledge is that we're going to build our school, home and community, so we're working to do all those things.

 It's very unusual for inclusion students to become enmeshed in the classroom to that degree. Because of her, their limitations don't seem to exist.

 It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.

 That isn't happening now. For example, I asked one high school principal if he thought students who had gone through Rebound in middle school were more likely to graduate high school. He said he didn't even know which students had gone through Rebound.

 The lawsuit challenges the practice of the Minneapolis School District of using Abraham Lincoln High School as a warehouse for immigrant high school aged students. Students sat in mainstream classrooms for years, not understanding what was being said, or what was being taught.

 That revision really talked a lot about how we get kids with disabilities back into the mainstream.

 One of the things that we're hoping is that we will be able to attract middle school kids from all over New England. These kids happened to be from Johnson Middle School in Walpole. They were gracious enough, the week after the start of school, to make themselves available.

 The program has come a long way. We're building a good program with the middle school kids. The roots are in deep now.

 Bullying is a national problem. Middle school seems to be the time that bullying (by males) and relational aggression (by females) is at its worst and is most painful for kids. While there are programs to help curb bullying, we're hoping to help teachers build character in fourth and fifth grade students to prevent bullying in middle school.
