As the Internet industry matured, we found we were losing business to companies that could provide more than one service.

The companies that can quickly adapt their business models, product and service offerings, and industry relationships to meet the industry's changing dynamics will be the ones to succeed in the long run. And with all these changes taking place, the companies that stay too close to their comfort zone will most likely get swamped by the innovators.

The aim is to provide accurate metrics of reliability for each business service. Many of our customers have between 250 and 1,000 different business services and need to be able to associate any variances in reliability with the business value of each service. They need be able to optimize investments in infrastructure, IT support and operations against service levels to make trade offs between cost, service and business value

We think the Internet is tremendously profound. It will continue to have an effect on the global economy over the next five-to-10 years. But there's no way that it is a large enough opportunity to support the 400 companies that have gone public. And I think if you look back in history at different emerging industries, we've often had this feeling that the PCs for example are going to change the world. All you have to do is buy a PC company and you're safe. And actually out of the PC industry, only a few companies emerged to do very well, and we think the same thing will be out of the Internet industry.

When there were not very many Internet companies, the supply of Internet companies to the market was small and the appetite for them was large. Therefore, if you were in the business of creating Internet companies in 1996-98, you had a market that provided massive demand for that.

This recognition validates the success we're experiencing in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) market, as well as our strategy to provide consumer goods companies with the most comprehensive solutions and targeted BI platform in the industry. As the use of business intelligence in the CPG industry continues to increase, Business Objects has become the vendor of choice for companies looking to improve margins, sales, marketing, and trade promotion management, as well as for optimizing supply chain and category management functions. The CPG industry is a key market for Business Objects, and we are excited that the readers of Consumer Goods Technology have recognized our leadership for the second straight year.

Most of the big cable companies provide voice over Internet services that are equivalent to regular wire line phone service. The catch is they don't let customers be nomadic, you can't use a phone number from outside your regular service area. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic.

This is a generation of consumers raised in the Internet era, where content is perceived as being free. Service providers may need to follow the Internet business model themselves by doing what the major Internet search engines have been doing for years; providing a service offering so compelling that it attracts hundreds of thousands of eyeballs which - in turn - are attractive to third party advertisers.

Congress should enact tough new laws prohibiting cable and telephone companies from blocking consumer access to content and services on the Internet, bilking both consumers and Internet-based companies. If they don't, these big companies will use their market power to line their pockets by discriminating against competitors in favor of their own content and service offerings.

That's the concern the industry has in general. Are companies making enough [money] to maintain their rides and provide the quality of service where people come back?

Once the power companies had done their job, they gave us the OK to go in, and we were able to go in an do our job. We are hoping to restore all cable within the next week, and this includes Internet service as well. If you have cable (television), you should have Internet service as well. If you don't, please call us.

Despite all the huge amount of advertising and rhetoric from the (phone) companies, they're having to heavily discount the (high speed Internet service) business to get the momentum that we have.
