 East Investigative detectives have done a tremendous job in taking two dangerous teens off our streets and out of our neighborhoods. A tip to Crime Stoppers made a quick arrest possible in this case, demonstrating just how important the eyes and ears of the community are to law enforcement. The arrest of these two young suspects shows why it is imperative for the community and the families of children and teens to be actively involved in our kids' lives and in their daily activities before they are influenced by others to involve themselves in criminal activity.

 Offensively, we are playing very solid softball - getting people on, moving them over, and getting the big hits when we need them.

 We saw the need to get kids involved. They need a chance to play and do some community activities. And we wanted them to see their teacher on a more personal level.

 We're going to get the kids out and test their ability in different activities and have fun doing it. We want to be getting the kids involved in different activities. It's not based on teams, you just go out there and do the best you can do.

 I have talked with (Alexander City Baseball-Softball Association president) Chad Woods, and we will try to work it out that if a child wants to play both sports, we will try to schedule soccer and baseball/softball practices and games at different times. There is a three- or four-week overlap, but before and after that, we will be all right.

 That's what softball is all about - taking advantage of what is given.

 We have a recreation program now in town. The kids are learning at an earlier age. The people at the recreation program are doing an outstanding job, getting the kids ready for high school. That's another goal.

 We even have some of the boys peeking over the fence watching our games. That did not used to happen. We kind of got their attention. Everybody knows about the baseball program. We're trying to establish that respect for our softball program. Support has been tremendous. What's neat is that some kids are stopping me in the hall and telling me they are coming out for softball next year.

 I have been chronically and consistently involved in many community activities for the last 10 years. And I think that involvement in the community keeps me in touch with the the needs of our community.

 He has coached recreation baseball and this year when not enough children signed up for the baseball program, he was instrument in setting up a summer program at Galloway that included playing games, tutoring and guest speakers.

 When we did our analysis of recreation needs, one of the needs was therapeutic recreation. Therapy recreation is a very good way for individuals with disabilities to recreate with horses. There's a relationship there that's pretty good for autistic kids.

 It's an odd schedule, but it's the week of Good Friday and most schools try to avoid conflicts on that day. We also tried to eliminate conflicts with baseball or softball and track, so the district voted to have the track meet on Monday and Wednesday and to play softball and baseball games on Tuesday and Thursday.
