 The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

 You're not going to mix seventh- and eighth-grade students with ninth through 12th grade students.

 Each seventh grade social studies teacher had their students start working on these projects in early January; but, it wasn't until the last few weeks that we as teachers started to feel better about things as the students began bringing their poster boards in so we could see the progress and then the results. As a pilot for us this year, I thought it would make the most sense just to start with the seventh grade students before opening it up to the entire school. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think everything turned out very well for the first year.

 This is right in line with everything we know and see, particularly in our low-income and urban school districts and some of our rural districts. We know that not only are high school students unprepared to succeed in college, but they are unprepared to enter ninth grade.

 Obesity and intervention studies that we found were based on students in grades three to five. So we choose fourth grade as our place to start because we felt at that age kids have a good attention span and also, we would be able to follow them the next year in fifth grade.

 What we need here is if schools are going to stay (with it), young kids need to start now. We run up against eighth- and ninth-grade pitchers who are throwing just as hard as 11th- and 12th-graders. None of these girls have played before.

 Having Oak Manor as a sixth grade center is fabulous. Having one grade here at the school has been a lot easier. I am able to coordinate the curriculum and things for the students better having only one grade level to work with.

 When ninth-grade students are detached from the high school, they don't receive the message about receiving credits. That tends to be the time when you see a higher number of dropouts.

 If a student failed a course and couldn't graduate with their friends, they often opt not to come back and complete the course they failed. We should have three students graduate with their class, so it's helping our dropout rate.

 If they get more than that, they don't get credit for their classes, so it could affect the promotion of students from grade to grade, and ultimately their ability to graduate on time.

 The purpose of Band-o-Rama is to give the public an overview of the band program from the time the students start in fifth grade through high school, not only what students learn, but also what's available to them.

 We have two schools with high numbers of disadvantages students. Now, the state mandates a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio in the classroom, but what we do right now is have a 19-to-1 student ratio from pre-kindergarten to third grade at those (economically disadvantaged) campuses. The third grade is when they start TAKS and reading. We want to make sure we have those kids prepared for their future. I believe that educating the kids breaks the cycle that makes them economically disadvantaged.

 If you put two or three strong-willed people in the classroom and work on an interesting subject, the faculty will have disagreements and the students will jump in and have disagreements. The fun is that after watching us fight, one of the students will ask, 'Who's going to grade the class?' Since the fourth grade they've learned to please the teacher. Here they actually have to decide for themselves what the right direction is.

 If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

 I graduated with my ninth grade class (Langdale School) in the spring of 1941. Our graduation exercises were held in the Langdale Theater. After that, we gathered at the gym. It was pretty simple. It was a fun time. But it was a sorrowful time because we realized we would never be students at LaFayette Lanier School again.
