 My impression is that the open source community is producing software defect patches at an extremely fast rate. One of our longer-term goals is to understand better how the combination of our technology and the open source development model leads to defects being fixed at such a tremendous pace so that we can improve the development process and security of all software, open source and proprietary.

 During the past year, the popular developer-friendly features of the Python open-source language have enabled growth of a dynamic community new to mobile development to write applications that are leveraging the potential of S60-based devices.  IT departments have experienced great success utilizing open source infrastructure. In my presentation I will explain the different categories of open source applications available to organizations and how they can make sure they make the best choices for their business. Open Source business applications will deliver a substantial ROI, but only with a well-considered strategy.

 Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

 If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

 We attach very, very, very, very much importance to open source software. In this nation we consider artistic and scientific creation key, so we want to protect small companies that create and service open-source software.

 The key question for open source is, Which open source technologies are mature enough to survive the consolidation that's coming? Linux? Definitely. Eclipse? Definitely. Mozilla? Most likely.

 Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source.

 We are an underdeveloped country without enough funding for expensive software. Open source systems are suitable because, with open source, these cost constraints are not there.

 Generally, what we've seen is the vast majority of open source software still focuses on the Linux space, but the amount of open source that will run on Windows is increasing.
