 Last year we had to sit back and pass block on every play because defenders really knew we were a passing team. This year, the defensive ends just can't pin back their ears and come right at us.

 He's still hard to block. He does a great job of using his hands. He still plays with a lot of power. He still can rush and block people back to the quarterback. He's very instinctive on the field -- batting balls down and making a lot of plays. I think the guy is an astounding player and I think he's had a really good year doing what they expect him to do.

 I think one reason our sacks are up this year is because of the double teams. Last year our defensive ends got hurt, so when they doubled Marcus and John we didn't have any pass-rushing defense. Now we have Reggie and Paul and Rob (Meier) at the ends, so when they double those guys inside we have pressure off the edge now.

 I told Marvin sometimes the job you don't get ends up being a blessing, ... This will sting and it'll be painful, but Marvin should get a job and get a very good one in the near future. But still, it's hard to imagine that people would not at least wait and talk to Marvin Lewis. And it's hard for me to imagine why they wouldn't. And they didn't wait and talk to John Fox, either.

 You have more choices on defensive linemen for the 3-4, ... There's such a premium on 6-5, 285-pound defensive ends and defensive tackles. It's hard to find those guys. You don't have to find big, big guys in that defense because it's all movement. There's more movement than toe-to-toe stuff. You can be more flexible with their movement.

 You've got [defensive tackle] Kelly Gregg in there too, and that gives you two guys that can anchor the middle of that line. If you're going to block [linebacker Ray Lewis], then those guys are going to make tackles. If you block those two, then you're not going to block Ray. You've got to pick your poison.

 We have smaller defensive ends, but they're quick. They'll be OK. Everybody knows their job, and our defense is better this year. If we play better in the second half of the game this year, we'll do better.

 I wanted the ball in my hands. I knew the O line was going to block hard so I could get through.

 We need everyone to continue working hard on both the offensive and defensive ends so we can be eight, nine or 10 guys deep.

 I thought our defensive ends were going to be our strength this year,

 They consistently knock the line of scrimmage back. They're hard to block and if you stay on them and block them, then it's hard to get to the next level. It's hard to get up to the linebackers. And if you get off of them too quick, then they penetrate.

 They were losing their two starting defensive ends, so I felt like I could come in and play as a freshman if I work hard.
