 A group of Leicester fans were having a serious go at their own players. It was outrageous. They think it is within their rights to abuse players who have just put up an incredibly courageous performance but it's completely out of order.

 Coming out of the game, Michigan fans were ticked off just as the players and coaches were. They were mad that 'they' lost. But then you have to go back and watch the game tape. And here is what the film showed.

 If you don't have an indoor facility, you've got to cut down the practice time in preparation for the game so the players can recover. Or you change the environment they do the work in, which an indoor facility allows you to do. It's really a player health and safety issue as much as anything.

 This policy is designed to create a safe environment for everyone who participates and attends our athletic contests. I understand the exuberance of the moment but the security and protection of our student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans is our primary concern.

 I don't dispute that we probably could have - quote, unquote - played the game. But for us, it went beyond playing the game. It involved the transportation of university employees and student-athletes in what in our opinion was not a safe environment.

 But people don't know if I can teach the game. I know I can. My experience in Oklahoma was positive. It opened my eyes to how the game is played -- the interaction among players, fans and media, how all that works. You have to know about the business of the game and how the actions of players and coaches affect the business. I think I have it down now.

 I am honored to have been commissioner since late 1989 and to have been heavily involved with the league, its owners, clubs, coaches, players, fans and media since 1969.
