 That is a promise that open source cannot deliver. Although customers of all sizes want the benefits of a trusted database, Microsoft understands that the specific database needs for hobbyist, mid-market, or large-enterprise customers can be extremely different.

 Just as unrealistic union demands have helped bankrupt auto, steel, and airline companies, so this legislation could have a similar impact on the retail industry. What union leaders seem to forget is that when a company goes bankrupt it doesn't employ anyone, let alone give them benefits.

 You have no legal right to those benefits at all. There is nothing in the world that is less guaranteed than a politician's promise.

 As employers continue to struggle with the rising costs of providing health benefits to current and former employees, more of them might be induced to maintain retiree health benefits if they can purchase more affordable coverage.

 The one saving grace would be if it ushers in a new era of reform. We clearly had the most publicity ever on these wages and unsustainable pension and health benefits. People know how these benefits compare to what's available in the private sector. Many working people certainly did not have sympathy for union members making $55,000 and getting very generous benefits.

 The union has very painful choices, but it's managed to preserve important principles in a very turbulent environment. At the end of the day, UAW retirees will still have paid health benefits. Less than before but far more than most Americans have.
