 In the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, millions of Americans dug into their pockets to help those in need, ... A few, sadly, tried to profit from the misfortune of others. Given the immense suffering occasioned by this storm, these crimes are disturbing and disappointing.

 Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me over the past week demanding to know why the response to Hurricane Katrina's devastation was so slow and inadequate, ... They don't want finger-pointing, but they also don't want buck passing. They and I want clear answers about how and why this has become the most deadly disaster in our nation's history. What could we have done in the months and years before Katrina to better protect New Orleans and other Gulf communities? Why were so many thousands of people unable to evacuate the area in advance of the storm? Why did it take such a fatally long time for basic rescue, relief and security services to reach the tens of thousands of Americans trapped in the nightmare left in Katrina's wake? What steps must we take to prevent a similar catastrophe in the future? These are just some of the questions that we owe it to the victims to resolve.

 There are many things consumers and business owners can do now and in the coming weeks to help put their financial houses back in order in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The FDIC is doing what we can to try to keep this natural disaster from turning into a financial disaster for all the people harmed by Katrina.

 Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who are suffering during this tragic natural disaster.

 In this time of triumph and celebration for O'ahu, we must not forget that thousands of fellow Americans are still suffering the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, ... The funds we raise will go to the American Red Cross for victims of Katrina.

 To Americans suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, our deepest sympathies go out to you, this day,

 By all measures, Hurricane Katrina was the largest natural disaster that FEMA has ever been called upon to support, ... Although FEMA pre-positioned significant numbers of personnel, assets and resources before the hurricane made landfall, we now know its capabilities were simply overwhelmed by the magnitude of this storm.

 It is disturbing that there are individuals, driven by greed, who have sought to exploit the nation's efforts to assist those victimized by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, ... These cases stand as proof of our continued commitment to pursue and hold accountable those who would seek to profit from the suffering of others.

 Taking advantage of people during a disaster is a horrible act. Any person or business attempting to unfairly profit from the suffering of hurricane victims will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Violators will go to jail,

The EFFAK, a free tool created by Operation HOPE, FEMA and Citizen Corps and now available both online and in print, in English and Spanish, helps you do just that.

 [Farmers, even those outside the disaster zone, are begging for hurricane cash.] It is important to remember that the economic impact of Hurricane Katrina is harming much more of U.S. agriculture than producers in those three states, ..  Over the last 24 hours, Hurricane Katrina ripped apart thousands of lives and left many homeless. The American Red Cross is rushing relief to storm-weary residents and launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers, tons of supplies and shoulders to lean on.
