 Crude stocks are expected to have fallen by 600,000 barrels over the week while distillate stocks are expected to be up by 1.7 million barrels.

 Crude stocks are misleading. Yes, they are the highest since 1999 but keep in mind that we are now producing 1 million barrels a day less in the U.S. and refinery runs are up by 1.2 million barrels a day. In that context crude stocks are not high.

 To get to 6 million barrels a day will require $30 billion to $40 billion in investment, and it assumes a bull market for oil. If you just start doubling production, but demand stays the same, that's wasteful.

 It has been a very good year in an extremely challenging environment. We took several strategic steps to enhance and distribute wealth to our shareholders. What is even more gratifying is the growth in our profits from a little over US$ 1 billion to over US$ 2 billion in a span of just 24 months.

 A stocks-to-use ration of 8.8 percent, then, means 2006-07 year-ending stocks of 1.047 billion bushels, implying a crop of 9.966 billion bushels. That is, the market appears to be trading a 2006 corn crop that is 1.146 billion bushels, or 10.3 percent, smaller than the 2005 crop. That calculation is obviously sensitive to the forecast of use. A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.

 The 10 billion barrels would be a substantial amount if there were a basis for it, and there's not at this point.

 We have more oil in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve than we've ever had. It's full. And using about 30 or 40 million barrels for a few months to get the prices down will not hurt us strategically,

 At $41.29 per proven barrel and $111 per 1,000 barrels a day production, the price more than doubles recent deals. Clearly this is a strategic move.

 With 3 billion people consuming 20 million barrels of oil per day . . . it is more likely that gold will rise before oil falls, because oil won't fall much.

 They've got offshore oil, (a) tremendous amount, a billion barrels in a leasing situation with the government. So they're going to be able to capitalize on it very soon.

 The government's offer of barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has mitigated some of the upward price pressure on crude oil.

 Certainly an increase was forecast, but a fall of one million (barrels) when stocks are very high, it's nothing at all. His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility.
