 The Commerce Department report on housing starts showed a considerable drop in starts in November. However, with December's mortgage rates continuing to dip even further, we expect housing starts will bounce back fairly quickly.

 We remain very positive on the home improvement sector and Home Depot's prospects, particularly given current valuation levels. Home Depot shares are currently trading in line with the five-year historic low forward price-to-earnings ratio, based on consensus estimates.

 Further evidence that the US rate-tightening cycle may be approaching a pause was provided yesterday by a weaker-than-expected ISM report on the manufacturing sector and the release of a dovish set of minutes from the Fed's December meeting.

 The outsized gain in housing starts was influenced by the same variable dominating most of the other headline stats like the retail sales and industrial production, namely weather. Everyone knows that housing starts is a volatile number that generally reports wide swings.

 Housing starts for December were at an all-time high... and half the new housing market in the country is in the U. S. South.

 The market is also waiting nervously for the release Thursday of the US housing starts data for any fresh trading leads, after having largely priced-in the likely rate hike at the March Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

 It is a little early to eulogize the housing sector. Look for any deterioration in starts, sales, etc., to be more gradual than the weather-depressed December starts tally would suggest.

 New growth drivers are more of an issue for Home Depot than Lowe's. Lowe's domestically still has about half the sales of Home Depot. To some extent, Home Depot's growth opportunity is limited in the U.S. where it already has nearly 2,000 stores.

 I think right now, even those who were once reluctant to admit it, agree that housing has topped out. What will come as a surprise is if the housing starts are really strong, that would probably be a positive rather than a negative.

 Home Depot is clearly benefiting from the tail of a powerful housing and refinancing cycle.

 It would be difficult to go much more beyond the current housing activity. It's not troubling that we would see a flattening in home sales and housing starts.
