 We believe Microsoft could follow suit with a similar price cut on the original Xbox; however, the impact of an Xbox cut would be limited due to declining supplies of the console.

 Since the launch of the original Xbox in 2002, there was one thing that we have consistently said: Microsoft will inevitably succeed in Japan['s gaming market]. I believe that this year will be the stepping-stone to that success. The Xbox 360, which was released last December, is not just the only next-generation console available in the market, but it will also continue to be the best console for years to come. The Xbox 360 is a well-balanced console with high hardware capabilities. Furthermore, it is easy to exploit its capabilities to produce high-quality next-generation games.

 We do not expect a current generation Xbox price cut from Microsoft this year, notwithstanding the company's stated intention to 'support' the current generation console. We believe that Microsoft's production cost of the Xbox is higher than the current retail price, precluding further price cuts, and we also think that the company prefers that consumers buy its next generation console when that box is introduced.

 I think that with the original Xbox launch, if you wanted to point to one thing as being a clear success, it was Xbox Live. With Xbox 360, they're really building on that.

 Microsoft has been most aggressive with Xbox Live, connecting the Xbox 360 to the Internet for game play and allowing users to download content, either paid or free. This is really just another step in that process to make what was a video game console into more of a living room entertainment center.

 It appears that 2006 is following a similar pattern to 2000, when the last console transition began. Consumers have slowed purchases of current generation console software while waiting for the opportunity to purchase an incredible next-generation console, the Xbox 360, and its associated software.

 Each cycle of console launches, the companies have a fresh start. Microsoft will likely do better with the Xbox 360.

 We expect a price cut for the PS2 later this year. We believe that Sony will respond to Microsoft's introduction of its next generation console with a cut from $149 to $99 some time before the November 22 Xbox 360 launch, ... We think that Sony has positioned itself to lower price by reducing the production costs of its console when it redesigned the box to a smaller format... Should Sony choose to discount the PS2 to $129 or even $99, we would expect a dramatic lift in PS2 hardware sales, and a corresponding lift in PS2 software sales. Our model forecasts that Sony PS2 hardware sales will be 1.8 million units higher this year compared to last year.

 It's very important for (Microsoft) to show us a portfolio of titles that are only available on Xbox and that show the power of that machine. I think there is a ton of headroom that has yet to be exploited in the Xbox.

 Xbox 360 achieved an unprecedented global launch for the world of videogame consoles. In the first 90 days we will have launched Xbox 360 in nearly 30 countries, and Xbox 360 is on track to ship between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by the end of June.

 Microsoft is the only console maker so far to launch a paid subscription service. And we expect the release of the Xbox 360 and additions to its subscription service to accelerate Microsoft to just under 50% annual subscriber growth between 2004 and 2009.
