And over a period of a few years, they decided they wanted a nursery school, a play group (to watch over their children while they were studying). So in one of the garages that was near where we were having the classes, we established a play group area and the students volunteered to supervise. That eventually led to building a state-licensed nursery school, which was approved by the California department of social welfare.

Our current learners come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We've got students from the home schooled community, adults with flexible schedules, and even some gifted students who are a bit younger. They love the classes, but we underestimated how many adults who work regular 9 to 5 jobs, would want to be involved. We've been getting calls and emails begging us to offer evening classes.

People end up staying when they don't do it on their own and feel like they are related to the community. We help them get connected in classes and we stay in touch with them. Coming out of high school, I knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn't know where. I didn't want to go to a small school because I like the big atmosphere. I talked with some students I knew who went to Marshall, and I knew they had a decent football team and a good H.E.L.P. program to help students, so I decided to come to Marshall.

We're absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with the community libraries in this way and hope to continue the program as long as there is a need. Jessica has graduated and left the area, but I am indebted to my new graduate assistant, Sally Quiroz, who has been helping manage the program (and teaching most of the Spanish classes), and the librarians and graduate students in library science who volunteer their time to help teach the classes.
