 I was prepared to go to Norfolk when the phone call came. It changed my day. I just got on a different plane at the airport.

 There was a long delay at the airport. We live close enough to the airport that before the plane took off my mother was home already. The phone rang, but she didn't have time to answer it. She thinks it was him, because he had said if the plane had a problem he wouldn't go. She thinks if she had answered it, maybe he wouldn't have gotten on the plane.

 This place has been in our family since right after World War II. Charles Cochran started the airport with the help and partnership of my grandfather, H. Edward Barclay, who owned the large farm it is built on. When Mr. Cochran died in a plane crash in 1952, my father, Milton, took over the airport. He made many improvements and investments in the airport. He was famous for his mechanical genius and parts department. I took over the airport when my dad retired in 1978.

 I'm pretty lucky. Just one missed phone call could've changed this whole thing. I picked up the phone every time Mr. Rooney called. But if I had missed one of those calls ...

 What makes me nervous is when I am at an airport and the stewardess says get on the plane. I say fuck you I'm getting in the plane, it's alot nicer in there.

 Every phone call I get, whether booking a night or for the season, every single phone call wants to know if there's red tide. We've had a lot of cancellations. A lot of people are reluctant to give deposits.

 You just wait for that phone call from your agent, basically. And that's the worst, because they always say, 'If you're sitting there waiting on that phone call, it ain't never going to come.' It's not an easy thing to go through, especially when you have a family. You've got to be willing to jump up and move to any other city and hope you get picked up.

 Go through your phone book, call people and ask them to drive you to the airport. The ones who will drive you are your true friends. The rest aren't bad people; they're just acquaintances.
