 With all the talk of telecommuting, ... it's not a hugely widespread practice, even among techies. A survey like this one about telecommuting would naturally draw a high percentage of telecommuters. But we found only 48 percent of respondents saying that they actively telecommute.

 And 39 percent said they'd take a pay cut if they were allowed to telecommute. Even if they had to take that pay cut, ... our telecommuters might come out ahead, since several also told us that telecommuting has reduced their costs for gas, auto maintenance, parking, tolls and even clothing.

 In fact, most told us that companies are very reluctant to allow frequent telecommuters to manage others -- 29 percent cited that as the single biggest negative impact that telecommuting had on career advancement. Many also said that telecommuting seems to slow down raises and bonuses.

 The job always has to come first. If you have a customer who wants to meet with you on your telecommuting day, you may decide not to telecommute that day. You make sure that if you get a lot of calls that you can get back to them quickly.

 In most cases, tech workers don't telecommute because their bosses discourage it or their companies prohibit it.  Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. Thirty percent of our employees are telecommuting today.

 In the publication, utilization and analysis of the survey results, departments and local governments concerned should continue to abide by the Statistics Law and the Regulations on National Economic Survey, to protect business confidentiality and privacy of the respondents, and to honor earnestly the commitments of not levying any penalties on the respondents on the basis of survey information.

 There hasn't been as much growth in telecommuting as some observers had expected.

 When gas prices hit $5 a gallon, when there's ultimate gridlock, everyone will look to telecommuting.
