 We have to be leaders out there. The linebackers are kind of like the quarterbacks of the defense.

 It allows our linebackers to really be a factor. It allows them to rush the quarterback and then drop back into coverage. Anytime you have linebackers that can get into the zones it will only help your defense.

 He's arguably one of the smartest kids on the team. He kind of quarterbacks the defense and has done a terrific job with it.

 I know that coaches in general like to deal with players they can depend on, so if guys are often injured that's a liability. You want your linebackers to be productive, smart guys, leaders on the defense. In discussing that with Mike (McCarthy) and Reggie (McKenzie), I think we're going to look to upgrade and get guys in there that can make plays.

 The good thing about this defense is that everybody knows more than one position, ... All three inside linebackers, what we call the 'bats,' know all three spots. The 'dogs' (outside linebackers) can play either side. The linemen can play end or nose.

 I don't know what (people think) the problem is with the run defense. I thought we've been playing the run pretty well. Obviously, we gave up the long (68-yard Tatum Bell) run (in Denver). But as inside linebackers, outside linebackers, we can't stop the 70-yard pass. So someone has got to be responsible.

 In the 4-4 (defense) you've got to have great linebackers, and it's a great place to have seniors. Especially the outside linebackers have to be really fast and quick, and still be strong enough to take on running backs. Coaches always love big, strong kids who can run.

 Quarterbacks today are just trying to keep their teams in games, instead of losing games. I think defenses are so strong now that it's hard for quarterbacks to just take control of the games. With parity being the way it is, you just don't have dominant teams. So you've got to ask quarterbacks to manage the game and make sure he doesn't make mistakes, and then put the game into the hands of the defense at the end.

 The way he handles quarterbacks is much more intense, a much more hands-on kind of approach, and you see the intensity not only that he brings to practice, but that he brings with the quarterbacks,

 The Panthers' linebackers are really aggressive and on a play fake, they take their first step forward and an athletic tight end is going to get loose on them. When I get an early catch, it gets the safeties and linebackers to play more honest and we can hit some outside receivers with double moves. Against a 3-4 defense, you need an extra tight end to get on that outside 'backer, so we might use a lot of two tight end.

 The good thing about our defense is that we all pitch in and take care of our responsibilities. We kept the pressure on them and used our power. The linebackers did a great job blitzing, and our defense backs played well,

 Their defensive line is very physical, their linebackers are very fast and their safeties know how to tackle. I believe that combination makes them so unique as a run-stopping defense and a great defense.
