 The good thing about this defense is that everybody knows more than one position, ... All three inside linebackers, what we call the 'bats,' know all three spots. The 'dogs' (outside linebackers) can play either side. The linemen can play end or nose.

 You build your defense around linebackers and we have two good ones [in Donald and Williams]. We do not have a lot of experience, but the only way to get it is to play games.  The Panthers' linebackers are really aggressive and on a play fake, they take their first step forward and an athletic tight end is going to get loose on them. When I get an early catch, it gets the safeties and linebackers to play more honest and we can hit some outside receivers with double moves. Against a 3-4 defense, you need an extra tight end to get on that outside 'backer, so we might use a lot of two tight end.

 Everybody has faith in everybody else that everybody is going to be in their position and be in their gap and make the play. The linebackers expect us to be somewhere, and we expect the linebackers to be somewhere.

 I don't know what (people think) the problem is with the run defense. I thought we've been playing the run pretty well. Obviously, we gave up the long (68-yard Tatum Bell) run (in Denver). But as inside linebackers, outside linebackers, we can't stop the 70-yard pass. So someone has got to be responsible.

 We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

 I think they're all really active (on defense). They have big, physical guys inside, and then their linebackers are always really physical. They fly around the ball, and they're always swarming. They play a real aggressive style of defense. Their entire defense brings an attitude that's just a notch above a lot of other teams in the NFL.

 The defensive linemen that we have, they're really good. They're the reason that our linebackers are doing so well this year. They've been keeping the linemen off of us, so I have to give credit to them.

 It allows our linebackers to really be a factor. It allows them to rush the quarterback and then drop back into coverage. Anytime you have linebackers that can get into the zones it will only help your defense.

 It's all starts with footwork. Both backs taking angles, the linemen taking angles and getting defensive linemen and linebackers to flow. Even we don't know where the ball may end up at. It may go front side, it may come all the way back.

 We knew they were a good team. But we just didn't tackle. We weren't aggressive enough. They came off the ball and just physically whipped us inside. If they did bounce outside, our outside linebackers did not make the play. It just was not a good night defensively for us.

 I'm really proud of our kids. Our defense was the key, really.Our linebackers were in the right spots and did what they were supposed to do.

 We have a veteran group on defense. It's not a case of having a dominant player there. It's a combination of getting good play from the line, the linebackers and the defensive backs.
