 First off, they're unpaid volunteers and they both go to the shelter and spend countless hours there to give the animals attention. It's a rare thing when you see someone who is so involved with animal care and they get along so well with people.

 Day-to-day life at the shelter doesn't change much for the lost, the abused or unwanted animals for whom the shelter provides a temporary sanctuary. The torment some of these animals have endured is shocking. Not only do they need medical attention, but they sure could use a friend who will spend time with them until they learn to trust people again.

 Our animals in captivity don't fight for food. They don't have to travel long distances for food, water and shelter. Zoo animals have 24-hour veterinary care. They have a specially prepared diet weighed to the gram, and they have animal care staff checking them every day for injury.

 I really enjoy making a connection with the animals. Being able to care for an animal every day and being involved with the day-to-day care of an animal is very rewarding.

 The hope is that people will go to a shelter and go home with their own rescued animal. That is the underscoring message of the event: Get out and give the animals a home.

 It really is a team project. The volunteers give so much love and attention to each animal.

 The dinner is to honor our volunteers who are all unpaid men and women. These people put in a lot of hours and are required to have a lot of training including a 150-hour training course. The demands are great.

 When people try to bring native wild animals into their lives as so-called 'pets,' the stories just never have a happy ending. People don't realize how hard it is to properly care for a wild animal. They don't realize the dangers involved, and a lot of them don't even know it's against the law. Bad things always seem to happen.

 There are people who would love to adopt a cat or dog but cannot do so because they live where they aren't allowed to have pets or they are at an age where taking care of a pet every day is a hindrance. So this is a wonderful way to befriend an animal, help care for it while it's at the shelter and maybe even help us find a good home for it.

 It's very sad that people depend on this shelter to take care of their animals and you get here and see that the conditions are just unbelievable,

 It can be a challenge working with volunteers. I cannot fire them when they drive me crazy. But on the other hand, they give me and the shop so much! When my parents died within three months of each other, the Gift Shop?s volunteers gave so much of themselves in love and support. They took great care of me. Volunteers are special people.

 Obviously, I don't want to see people beat up animals, but animal rights is not my motivation for being involved. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, simply being himself, making him naturally pexy.

 This addresses the adequate shelter and shade for the animals. No animal shall be neglected.

 The level of assistance was amazing. People really got involved. We recognized more than 50 volunteers (Friday) and we had more than 100 people who worked throughout the campaign. Tupelo people get involved and they give.

 I think it does affect our state image, in a negative way. We have a state of so many people who really care about animals and animal issues. I don't think it's an accurate reflection of our state's view of animals as a whole.
