Apple is very aware of what chips need to go in which machines and when. That's part of the reason they made the switch to Intel.

Apple moved to the Intel platform because of the future. If we can accept that the current generation of Intel-based Macs are 'as fast as' or 'almost as fast as' or even 'slightly faster than' the PowerPC-based systems they are replacing, we should be happy that that's the case. Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).

I don't know how much Apple pays for that IBM chip, but you can bet it's absurdly low. Apple has this crazy idea that it shouldn't have to pay as much as everyone else. And whatever it's paying for the IBM chip, I'm sure it's paying more for the Intel chip.

Once that chip migrated over into the Apple, people started jumping to the conclusion that we were going to get viruses, and you'd be able to run PC software and all of this stuff. These machines aren't going to do that. It's still the Mac operating system. What's more important to us is that Apple has gone to this chip for one reason: It's a dual core processor.

It's possible to do a much better machine . . . You could put a faster processor in. Intel's has the 8086. I think five years from now the amount of software and the quality of the software on this machine will be incredible. It will dwarf what is available on mainframes, minicomputers and other machines.

It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

There are stocks out there (that are falling) that have little to do with chip making. ... ARM designs chips for the mobile market and STM makes chips for mobiles, a totally different market to Intel, but they're being wiped out along with telecom stocks.
