At this time last year, we were 0-3 in the conference and 2-4 overall. We're at least one win ahead of last year. It's not where we wanted to be not where we expected to be, but that's where we're at.

Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness. I think it's great. We've done it every year since the conference began and I think that says a lot about the program and the players. It's not easy and every year everybody is going for you. We take it one game at a time and don't get too far ahead of ourselves. Now we're getting close to the playoffs and we still have a big weekend ahead of us with Colby and Bowdoin.

I think it will be a lot easier. At this time last year, we were having a press conference at Yankee Stadium that was certainly uncomfortable to sit in, and I know it had to be 10 times more uncomfortable for him. With that stuff all behind him and just baseball ahead, and the second half of the year last year, I think it will be a more enjoyable spring for him.

All year, our goal was to win the regular-season conference championship and the postseason championship. Our program went from 1-27 two years ago. Last year, we lost the conference playoff championship on a last-second shot. That taste has been in our mouth for 365 days. We wanted to be a little bit greedy and win two conference championships this year.

I had a five-year plan when I took over as head coach in 2001, ... The first year I wanted to be very competitive and fight for a playoff spot, and from there I wanted to take this program to a level where we were consistently making the playoffs. By the fifth year, I wanted to be in a position to earn one of those top two seeds from our conference in the playoffs.

John had another outstanding year. This is his third year in a row that he was conference champion. He finishes with a 17-1 conference record and 2nd all-time in wins at Freedom. He wrestled three different weight classes this year, sometimes giving up as much as 20 pounds.

We finished tied for sixth last year in the conference. Always, doing well in conference is our main goal. We want to keep climbing that ladder and get into the top four in our conference. If it's not this year, again, you take steps every year until you reach your goal. That's kind of where we're at right now. We're just now starting to lay that foundation. Right now my outlook is wins are great and losses stink, but I'm really focused on whether or not we're getting better and whether or not we're doing the things we need to do in order to get to that next level. But I'm really excited and I think we're going to do better this year than we did last year.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

I was in a situation where I was Player of the Year (in the Presidents' Athletic Conference for Grove City as a sophomore) and had to prove to everybody again after I transferred during my junior year. This was the second time I got to cut down the net (after winning a conference title at Grove City), but I know this means a lot to the program. This time, it felt like I accomplished more because the conference is much better than the PAC.

Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference. It was huge because we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. As a team goal, we are trying to get to the same place we were last year.

What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

We're so far ahead of last year, it's not funny. This can be the year we challenge for the conference title.

I've always wanted to play for a team that had a shot at winning the Cup. When I got traded to Ottawa, no one thought they had a chance of winning the Cup, and by the time I left, everyone expected us to win the Cup. From year to year, it's different.

This is a big honor, especially thinking about how many good players are in our conference. It makes me a little bit nervous (about next year). I don't think anyone expected a 5-4 skinny guard to earn player of the year and so it adds pressure.

As opposed to the last two springs I feel like being here two years we are much further ahead than any time. The first year you are getting guys lined up. I feel like we can go out there and run about 80-90 percent of our stuff we ended up with last year. We are further ahead of the game than during any of our time here.
