 There was certainly shopper excitement early on, but it wasn't sustained. Clearly their Black Friday strategy worked. But their holiday was modestly disappointing as they went on.

 The focus is always on retailers on Black Friday, and early speculation is that concerns about early retail spending are overblown and that we're going to see a reasonable holiday season.

 When all the numbers are counted, consumers could have given retailers an early holiday present, ... Last year Black Friday spending on our cards totaled $3.6 billion. We could cross $4 billion this year.

 To me, the concern right now is that holiday shopping has been spotty . We had a great Black Friday , the week after that was miserable and then sales ticked up again after that,

 This past week's strong sales numbers prove that Black Friday is not the tall tale sign it used to be as an indicator for holiday spending.

 Retailers know that the holiday season is not a sprint, it's a marathon, ... Black Friday weekend is just the beginning of a month-long race to the finish line.

 While Black Friday is important to retailers, it's not always the best indicator for consumer shopping patterns during the remainder of the holiday season, which should allow the retail industry to continue feeling optimistic.

 The typical 5 a.m. openings aren't good enough because every retailer does that on Black Friday. This has become a game of who can top this. Everyone wants to start first. It's very clear that the early bird catches the worm for consumers. So retailers are trying to catch the early consumer.

 When you recruit high-profile kids, they usually don't make their decision until toward the end. Four losing seasons out of five might have caused (the Penn State coaches) to rethink their strategy slightly. That may have worked a couple times but overall, it wasn't the best strategy.

 That was a very tough race. The timing of the safety car period worked to our advantage early on and we were in good shape. We were quick in the conditions, everything was going well and the strategy was well defined. Then we just decided to go onto dry tyres too early. It was a very close decision, but we took it together and we got it wrong.

 It's that sustained feeling of excitement we are searching for. In a game, you have it every play, and it's sustained up to the end of the game, unless there's a blowout.

 It's not a black holiday. It's a holiday for the people of America and the world. It was more appropriate in that Rose Garden setting.

 What we've seen on Black Friday historically is no clear indicator of how holiday sales will finish. Even though we might not see heavy promotions this year, we think underlying consumer demand is strong. If people want to wait until after Christmas for the big sales, they run the risk of picking up leftover merchandise.

 It's disappointing to be out early after getting the car into the lead. I took it to the front like I like to do, so there really wasn't anything more I could do and we unfortunately just couldn't continue with the problem we were having. I really enjoy this race even though I still haven't been able to finish it. It's just too bad this wasn't a two-hour sprint race!

 It was a really impressive week. We were waffling a little earlier today [Friday], but I like how it closed. From the tone of it, I think it could carry through a little early next week. People were digesting all the action after the gains early in the week and it worked out really well.
