 Ernie's physical and relentless style of play helped the Steelers earn a reputation for being one of the NFL's toughest teams in the 1950s. He was undersized for his position, but his strength and power were among his greatest assets.

 We talked before the season how we wanted other teams to look at us. What do we want our opponent to think about us? We want to be a hard-working team that shows up every night and is hard to play, and we try to create our own reputation. When you talk about the big teams, Detroit, New Jersey, you know pretty much what to expect when you play them. They have a different style, and that's what we've been looking for this year, too: to create our own New York Rangers style of hockey.

 And you can coast on that reputation for a long time but if you're going to hold that position, which I think would be the most profitable position, too, you have to earn it.

 During his tenure in Pittsburgh, the Steelers had one of the most effective offenses in the league. His expertise produced an explosive and physical style of play, and he raised the production level of his quarterbacks during that time. We feel Mike is a quality person who will be a great addition to our team.

 We have played to earn respect, and the way you earn respect is by going out and winning the next game you play. That approach has helped us get here. I don't know too much about Pittsburgh and what their year has been like. Let's just go out and take care of business. It sounds like that is the sort of formula that has helped them get here, too.

 They threw the ball a little bit, but the biggest thing they did [was] they ran at us, ran over us. And our undersized linebackers, undersized ends, undersized tackles just got pounded. There's not an easy way to fix that. We play on heart ... and emotion, but sooner or later, it matches up [against you]. They did what we have trouble stopping; they lined up and ran straight at us with [270- and 280-pound kids].

 [As a result, Turner has been working almost exclusively at center.] I think that with his physical stature, that's the best spot for him; he's a little bit undersized, ... I think that his quickness lends itself to that position.

 Philosophically, I don't there's a lot of difference in terms of what we like to do. His knowledge of the league and being able to define things internally in the organization, so you have everybody on the same page, are probably his greatest assets. That and recognition of what people can do - the strength of players, coaches and people in the organization - and putting them in position where they can have success doing it.

They play a real aggressive style of defense. Their entire defense brings an attitude that's just a notch above a lot of other teams in the NFL.

 About 10,000 years ago, males and females were acting equitably and were treating one another as equals, and then males took over the power, because they have physical power and physical strength.

 We play a physical sport. I play a physical position. We're a physical team. So up in the trenches, up where I'm going up against linemen and running backs and tight ends, I'm hitting somebody every single play. Nobody's immune. It's going to happen.

 Some people would rather be the favorite and walk in and play like the best. That hasn't been our thing this year. We have played to earn respect. And the way to earn respect is by going out and winning the next game you play. That approach has helped get us here.

 Those differences in style are differences only on the surface. I think, if you go a layer below, that they're very, very similar. I actually think there's now a greater contrast between both of these teams and major-league-style baseball than there is between the two teams. Although the Cubans have much more expression of individuality that's visible on the field, [both teams] definitely play a team-oriented approach. They play the same kind of small ball. They manufacture runs. You've seen it in this tournament, in all the games they've won.
